Lost, episode 5: "... and Found"

Well... that was yet another build-up episode. It seems this season is an "every other" type of season... as in every other episode is exciting, and their counterparts are ho-hum plot builders. Well, actually not "builders" as much as "fillers". I actually had high expectations for this week based on last week's trailer and the sighting of the Others and that scary body on a stake. Turns out this episode wasn't very fast paced or suspenseful. Still enjoyable, but a bit of a letdown considering the next two weeks are repeats.

Until I get a chance to browse the boards, here's a brief summary from Entertainment Weekly...

On 'Lost,' while Sun tries to find her wedding ring, Michael hunts in the jungle for Walt, Jin hunts for Michael, and the new kids take Sawyer back to camp by Whitney Pastorek

Tonight my beloved Astros are headed to the World Series for the first time in 40 kabillion years, so it goes without saying that I love everyone. I love you, I love that testy b---- Michelle Rodriguez, I even loved this episode, this tiny little episode that didn't really advance the plot so much but was an adorably sweet little hour of TV about a wedding ring and Jin's English skills.

What is there to say, really? I didn't even fill up a whole page of legal pad in writing down my notes because it was all sorta jungle fluff, but sometimes jungle fluff is okay, right?

The kids are all split up, most of them beachcombing as usual and the rest — Sawyer, Jin, and Michael — engaged in like the world's longest trust exercise with Little Ms. Girlfight and her ever-diminishing band of merry men (and Libby). How they went from 23 to like 6 is still unclear — my vote was cannibalism, but not after seeing poor what's-his-name all impaled in the forest. After the unabashed romanticism of this evening's festivities, I just hope Bernard makes it home to Rose. Don't you? Won't those double dates with Sayid and Shannon just be the funnest?

Let's see. We learned some stuff. Like ''orange'' is basically ''orange'' in Korean. Seoul is in the ''good part'' of Korea, and Sun more than likely did not attend the Olympics. Jack once kept his wedding ring in the sock drawer. (Uh, Jack? Yeah, but where's your wife?) The non-Other others have ''trust issues.'' Hurley once had a dog named Buster. (So did I, btw, a cuddly little chow-Lab mix that ran out onto the highway in Arkansas and got creamed by a truck, but hey, that's what happens to dogs in Arkansas.) Kate [hearts] Sawyer. Locke used to feel lost, but he doesn't anymore, which is kinda sad and I wish someone would tell him the name of the show. And for the first time, Jin's ability to fish made sense to me — duh, his dad was a fisherman, and it's in the genes. Yes, I am a retard.

So what's a conspiracy show without a conspiracy? Pretty much the only thing that advanced the mythology tonight came when Mr. Eko (I had to turn on the closed captioning to see how that was spelled) and Jin hid in the bushes as the People Who I Am Just Assuming Are the Others Because We're Running Out of Hostile Groups to Pin That Name On went trudging by — seems that the Others are a barefoot clan with a teddy bear fetish. Ooookay. Peter Pan reference? That's the best I can do. Honestly, there's nothing else to discuss.

This was a nice little ditty about destiny — well, of course Sun found her wedding ring in the sand where she buried the bottle, i.e., her husband who she thinks is dead but who we know is just off taking Island Berlitz courses — and the power of true love. It showed that Jin was once a very good man and Sun is one hot cookie. And it showed that, if nothing else, Mr. Eko can fashion one hell of a knife.

Um, don't push the button the button is bad? Can't wait for the next episode.

What do you think? Were you frustrated by the lack of clues? Did you spot any major ones we missed?

LOST – S2E5 - …And Found

Orange was an important part of last night’s show. There were references to it in the flashbacks and on the island.

Flashback – Orange hat pin that Sun puts in her hair before her set-up date
- Orange is how Jin will know that he is in love
- Orange lighting in Jin’s interview
- Jin wears an orange flower on his doorman’s uniform
- Sun and Mr. Lee (setup date) drink Orange Juice
- Jin bumps into Sun after looking at a girl in an orange dress

Island - Campfire has orange flames
- Michael’s T-Shirt is orange
- Fish that Jin catches have an orange belly
- Hair on Vincent’s back look a little orange
- Libby and Michael are looking for fruit (oranges?)
- Sun and Shannon picked fruit and fed it to Vincent (oranges?)
- Bruise on Jin’s cheek is a little orange

Sawyer lines
“I think that they’re going to eat us.”
Calls Jin “Chewie” – reference to what? Chewbacca?
“You seem suited for it” – after asking if Ana-Lucia is married.

Locke lines
“I used to get angry, even frustrated.”
“I’m not lost anymore.”
“Same way that lost gets found – I stopped looking.”

Hurley lines
“So, Seoul. Is that in the good Korea or the bad Korea?”
“Did you go the Olympics?”

Tail sectioners – Ana-Lucia, Mr. Echo (really Mistereko), Bernard, Libby, and Cindy
- Goodwin was killed by the Others
- Only eat fish and fruit
- Believe that “they” are inland
- Have a radio – unknown if it works or not
- Mr. Echo – “They don’t leave tracks.”
- Jin asks Mr. Echo if he is married and he replies “Worse”. Implies that his wife was on the airplane with him and either didn’t survive or was killed after they landed on the island.
- Rumor on the message boards is that Cindy (short haired brunette) was the flight attendant that gave Jack the vodka. No screen shots yet.
- Another message board says that there was a sixth person (tall male) on the beach when Mr. Echo first attacked Sawyer in an earlier episode. Still waiting for screen shots of this, too.

Jin’s full name is Jin Soo Kwon. He came from the Namhae village on the South Coast. He is the son of a fisherman. He used to work for the Asiana (?) restaurant where he was promoted from busboy to waiter. He worked in this episode at the Seoul Gateway Hotel as a doorman.

Sun went to the Seoul National University where she studied Art History. Her setup date, Mr. Lee, comes from a very wealthy family. They own the Seoul Gateway Hotel and 12 other hotels, as well. Mr. Lee studied Medieval Russian literature at Harvard before switching majors to Hotel Management. While at Harvard, Mr. Lee fell in love with an American woman and plans to return to the United States in six months to marry her.

Others – I counted 13 pairs of legs (some of them could have been repeated) and I believe all of them were barefoot. The last one had a teddy bear with a bandage around its left leg. Could this last Other be Alex – Danielle’s daughter?

We learn that it has been 4 days since the raft left.

We learn that the name of Sun and Jin’s dog was Bpo-Bpo, which means “a kiss” in Korean. We learn that Hurley had a dog named Buster that ate anything and everything and once, after getting into his change drawer that also had some Smarties in there, crapped out $1.35 in nickels.

BIG, BIG LET DOWN! I am starting to get bored with this season already. I didn't get to watch the first season until it was released on DVD and didn't have to wait a week between episodes. I am almost tempted to stop watching and wait for the DVDs if this season moves any slower.

I agree it is moving slow. Some coworkers of mine have made the same comment as you, how they watched season 1 on DVD at 2-3 episodes per night, and how seeing it one per week is painfully slow. Especially after this week's slow episode and us now having to wait 3 weeks for the next new episode. I still love the show, but I'll bet they are losing some fans. Let's just hope the upcoming new episodes during network sweeps is worth the wait!
