Lost, Episode 2.17: Lockdown

* UPDATE Fri 3/31 8am **: wow, interesting episode. I was cringing the whole episode, especially when the two bad guys were in Locke's house, thinking that would be how he was paralyzed. And the blast door impaling his leg. What about the supply drop parachute? And how about that twist at the end with the grave of Henry Gale?

Here's the map on the black light door map (click for larger image):

Here's an article on Entertainment Weekly about it. It's worth a look!

Ouch!

Sayid's Nadia?

Who wasn't nervous during this scene?

Cereal from the sky...

The "real" Henry Gale?

**NOTE - Thurs 3/30 7:30am **: nope, I didn't get to watch it yet. We're getting wood floors in our house and the workers didn't leave until after 9pm. With our house in shambles and everyone confined to the master bedroom, it didn't work out as planned. We'll watch it on tape tonight, though. I've already had several coworkers come up to me and say "Well, what did you think? Wasn't it a great episode?!"

Feel free to post your comments and discuss amongst yourselves and I'll read and post my feedback once I've actually seen the episode!

LOST – S2-E16 – “Lockdown” – Locke-centric

Quotes:

1. “So what’s done is done.” – Locke to Jack and Henry
2. “Put him in the armory.’ – Jack to Locke
3. “Why do you let him talk to you like that?” – Henry to Locke
4. “Maybe he left you his kidney.” – Helen to Locke
5. “I forgive you” – Locke to his father’s body at the cemetery
6. “Maybe if I was I the loop, I could be more helpful.” – Hugo to Jack
7. “Loop, dude. Loop.” – Hugo to Jack
8. “The going price is ten loads of laundry for a tube of Neosporin.” – Libby to Jack
9. “You stole my kidney.” – Locke to Cooper (his father) at the bar
10. “Will you shut up!” – Locke to Henry
11. “What happened?” – Henry to Locke
12. “I bid four papayas.” – Hugo to Sawyer
13. “How about you put your mangoes where your mouth is?” – Sawyer to Jack
14. “What’s in the bag, John” – Bad Guy #1 (Jimmy Bane) to Locke
15. “Were you lying to those men, John?” – Helen to Locke
16. “I’m gonna need your word that you’ll protect me – no matter what.” – Henry to Locke
17. “Should I go get a ruler?” – Kate to Jack and Sawyer
18. “Fun time’s over, Mongo. Why don’t you go and hit the buffet?” – Sawyer to Hugo
19. “Just because I dropped out of 9th grade, don’t make me an idiot.” – Sawyer to Jack
20. “Let’s just say something was burning and it wasn’t from the sunshine.” – Sawyer to Jack
21. “When I need the guns, I’ll get the guns.” – Jack to Sawyer
22. “Your date at the funeral – she got a name?” – Cooper to Locke
23. “I didn’t do this for the money.” – Locke to Cooper
24. “What’d you do – steal their livers?” – Helen to Cooper
25. “You need his love more than mine.” – Helen to Locke
26. “Thank you for not leaving me.” – Locke to Henry
27. “What’d you find?” – Jack to Ana-Lucia, Sayid and Charlie
28. “Do you think that it was all random?” – Locke to Henry
29. “We did find your balloon, Henry Gale.” – Sayid to Henry

Random Thoughts (Flashback events):
1. Poor Locke has some serious abandonment issues. I feel for him but I thought sure that he would take the money at the end (of course, he may have returned to the room after everyone left).
2. Good thinking on Locke’s part to replace the money in his bag with his work stuff.
3. Timing issue – does an obituary usually appear in the paper the morning of the funeral? Helen mentioned to Locke that they could have gone on the picnic instead (since it was hard for Locke to be there) while at the cemetery and I inferred it to mean that it was still the same day.
4. So, Cooper was a con-man, too. That must be why Locke doesn’t really trust Sawyer. I didn’t see any connection between Sawyer and Locke in the flashback unless those two men were mentioned in one of Sawyer’s flashbacks. I think that the main bad guy’s name was Jimmy Bane.
5. Did anyone catch who was buying the house that Locke inspected? It was Sayid’s girlfriend – Nadia. Talk about small world.
6. Timing issue #2 – after Locke gives Cooper the money, Cooper says that he has to catch his plane and that he has a cab waiting (which he does). Cooper only told Locke that he would be there until the afternoon and then he was leaving. How did Locke know what time to show up? Also, how did he know which room?
7. I felt really sorry for Locke when Helen said no to his proposal. He just can’t catch a break.
8. Was that an Oceanic plane that flew overhead?
9. Still no explanation on Locke’s paralysis.

Random Thoughts (Island events):
1. I liked Locke getting aggressive with Henry after Henry teased him about Jack giving him orders. Remember what Locke did to Charlie a few episodes ago. Don’t mess with the bald man.
2. Sure does rain a lot on that island. In fact, the island must be so big that it could raining really hard on Ana-Lucia, Sayid and Charlie on one side of the island but completely dry on the other side of the island.
3. Did anyone else think that Henry was purposely asking Locke what the noise was – just so Locke couldn’t really hear the voices? Were the voices speaking French? Was there magnetic interference with the speaker when Locke tried to jimmy with it?
4. Here are the cards that were shown during the three hands of Texas Hold ‘em. (1) Up cards = 3 C, 6 D, 4 C, 8 C, J H – Jack tells Hugo that his baby straight won’t beat Sawyer’s flush draw. (2) Up cards = K H, 5 D, 7 C, 2 S, Q S – Sawyer has Q D, Q C; Jack has K C, K S. (3) Up cards = could not see all of them but there was one 9 and one 5. Sawyer = one 5; Jack = one 9.
5. Did anyone else catch that along with Hugo, Kate and Libby watching Jack and Sawyer with binoculars, that there were two other islanders standing there with them? There was a blond girl and a guy standing on the left side. I haven’t seen an “extra” interact with one of the regulars since Dr. Arnzt (and we all remember what happened with him). Blooey.
6. I almost jumped out of my seat when the blast door came down on Locke’s legs. That had to be extremely painful. But at least he did get to see that black-light diagram on the door. It looked like all six hatches (a seventh one was crossed out) on the island. The one on the bottom looked like it extended out into the water (sharks?).
7. Now we know how the supplies come but what did the flashing light signify? Is it a signal from the hatch to indicate where and when to drop the food? Does it appear regularly or was it triggered with the blast doors? Or was the flashing light dropped from the plane too to indicate to the islanders where the food was dropped? Also, was the blast doors dropped on purpose to lock them in the hatch in order to drop the food without being seen? But if the food was dropped from a plane, wouldn’t have someone on the island seen or heard something? Has the food been there for a long time and no one noticed it before?
8. It was great to see Sayid angry and determined upon discovering the real Henry Gale in the grave. But if you were an Other, why would you bury a body in a grave with a gravemarker underneath a huge air balloon? It wasn’t a trap, so could Henry have been a friend? Or is he still an Other and just tried to stall for more time by sending them out there but not expecting them to actually dig up the grave?

Previews for next week:
1. I love Hugo’s flashbacks and next week looks like a good one. He keeps seeing someone in a bathrobe that, I am thinking, reminds him of someone from the institution. But most of the others have seen visions that were, or were not, really there – Jack and his father, Kate and the black horse, etc.
2. A Mr. Eko sighting for next week – yes!
3. Here is the schedule for next few weeks:

April 5, 2006: Dave (Hugo - centric)
Henry Gale (Michael Emerson) provides new information about the hatch, but it unsettles Locke; and Hurley's worried about the island's effect on him, so he goes to Libby for support. Flashbacks recall Hurley's days in the mental institution. Dave: Evan Handler. Dr. Brooks: Bruce Davison. Leonard: Ron Bottitta. Nurse: Grisel Toledo.

April 12, 2006: S.O.S. (Bernard and Rose - centric)
Sparks between Jack and Kate are rekindled when they venture into the jungle together to propose a "trade" with the Others; Bernard (Sam Anderson) wants to devise an SOS signal, but Rose (L. Scott Caldwell) thinks it's a terrible idea; and Locke begins to question his faith. Henry Gale: Michael Emerson. Isaac: Wayne Pygram.

Ugh - two weeks of reruns!

May 3, 2006: Two for the Road

May 10, 2006: ? (that's the actual title)

Ugh - another week of reruns!

May 24, 2006: Lost

Final thoughts:
1. Good episode. More excitement on the island than in the flashbacks.
2. Last week’s episode hardly mentioned any numbers at all. This episode was packed with numbers all through. And they weren’t all variations of our magic numbers, either. Here are some of them:
Flashback
09:30am – Time of funeral (according to Locke’s watch)
94-1007 – Sign on mailbox next to house Locke inspected
(714)-555-0116 – Phone number on Locke’s truck
4TRIO19 – License plate on silver car
6:38 pm – Time of bar scene (according to clock on wall)
$700,000 – amount of money Cooper got in his Retirement Con
$200,000 – amount Cooper offers to Locke for helping him
1516 – Safety Deposit box number
$5 – amount of change the taxi driver carries (according to sign on cab door)
3 hours – amount of time that Sayid, Ana-Lucia and Charlie have been searching
10 – loads of laundry it will take to gamble for a tube of Neosporin
47.00 – time shown on the countdown clock when Locke hears the static / voices
4 – number of papayas that Hugo bids
3 – number of papayas that Sawyer has left after Jack has taken most of them
9 – Grade that Sawyer dropped out of in high school
10 – number of mangoes that Jack bets to get aspirin and omoxicillin from Sawyer
CVIII – Roman numeral for 108 – appears on the map on the door
M-152-996-431-000 – number underneath picture on Henry Gales’ driver’s license
815 – Walnut Ridge, Wayzata, MN (address on driver’s license)
55391 – zip code on driver’s license

3. Here are some of the nicknames that Sawyer used:
Referring to Hugo – “Muttonchop”, “Mongo”
Referring to Jack – “Amarillo Slim”, “Cool Hand”

Good stuff, Kim. Here is another shot of the door with tons of text and possible explanations.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301
/kimsphotos/lost/243bfbf3.jpg

(I had to cut the url address in two in order to post it here.)

Some of the text translated:

Malum consilium quod mutari non potest: It's a bad plan that can't be changed.

Sursum corda: Lift up your hearts

Agrescit medendo: The treatment is worse than the disease

Ut sit magna tamen certe lenta ira deorum est: The wrath of the gods may be great, but it certainly is slow.

Credo nos in fluctu eodem esse: Think we're on the same wavelength

Cogito ergo doleo: I think therefore I am depressed

Hic sunt dracones: Here there be dragons

Ursa Martimus: Polar Bear
====
"Sursum Corda" is Latin from a Catholic Mass and mean "Lift up your hearts." It is also the title of an early poem from Ralph Waldo Emerson as follows:

Seek not the Spirit, if it hide,
Inexorable to thy zeal:
Baby, do not whine and chide;
Art thou not also real?
Why should'st thou stoop to poor excuse?
Turn on the Accuser roundly; say,
"Here am I, here will I remain
Forever to myself soothfast,
Go thou, sweet Heaven, or, at thy pleasure stay."—
Already Heaven with thee its lot has cast,
For it only can absolutely deal.
====
If you shine a black-light on the mural in the hatch, will you see anything?
====
The square roots on the map
/16 = 4
/64 = 8
/225 =15

The next sequences are
/256 = 16
/529 = 23
/1746 = 42
===
So there is a giant ? in the middle of the map.
Could that be related to the title, and possibly the topic, of a future episode?
