Lost 4x03: The Economist

Holy cow! Just when you think the show can't get better this season, they spring a Sayid episode on us... and we all know how awesome those ones are! This one surely didn't disappoint.

Here's a site for great screencaps of the episodes. Thanks to Kim for recommending them! Lost Easter Eggs Blog

Here are a collection of random tidbits of wow-ness...

* Sayid the hitman... working for Ben! Helping remove the bullet in a vet's office. Saying this all will help protect his friends. Oh my that is one massive switch when you think back to Sayid torturing Ben in the hatch closet. Also, earlier in this episode Sayid says "the day I trust him (Ben) is the day I sell my soul." I'm still not convinced Ben is bad. This show has a way of making me flaky that way!
* So what is this hit "list" Ben is feeding Sayid?
* time different on and off the island, as we see the time-tracking device show up 31 minutes AFTER its recorded impact. Multiply that times our survivors' time on the island and it is a LOT. Now multiply that times Desmond's years on the island. Or did the original "pushing the button" for the code in the hatch keep time in synch prior?
* Jacking talking about the Red Sox to the pilot then making the comment to the pilot that "I can't believe it's been 100 days" only to immediately be interrupted with Sayid returning.
* Miles: "Stay on the exact same course no matter what!"
* Ben's secret room filled with money, suits and passports.
* Locke's search for Jacob's cabin
* Hurley double-crossing Jack's group. Perhaps that is why in his episode he apologized to Jackk off-island for siding with Locke.
* Hurley had the line of the night in "oh great, the ship sent us another Sawyer."
* The bracelets on Naomi and Elsa. Naomi's says "N I'll Always Be There With You R.C."
* Elsa being a hitman using Sayid, while Sayid thought he was using Elsa to get to his target!
* Confirmed "Oceanic Six" thus far: Jack, Hurley, Sayid. Others shown off-island (though not described among the "six") are: Kate, Ben.
* Can't wait to see what Sayid and Desmond find on the freighter... assuming they make it there.

More later ...

OK, I got this from the Easter Egg site so I take no credit for coming up with it, but it sounds logical...

Actually, it's Einstien's theory of special relativity. Let's say you stand face to face with someone, hold a stopwatch and time his bouncing of a tennis ball. Let's say the result is 2 seconds for the ball to travel from his hand, to the ground and back into his hand. Now the same person gets on a train and bounces the ball. The result from his perspective is the same 2 second bounce. However from your perspective, if the train was see through and you could time his bouncing of the ball as the train is moving at a certain velocity, the ball bouncing time would be slower. Let's say 4 seconds. Now everytime you increase the speed of the train, the ball bounce from your perspective is even slower. This is because from your perspective, the ball does not bounce straight up and down (which would be the fastest way) but diagonally from point A to the ground and back to point B which was actually point A (the hand of the bouncer) but that Point A is now X number of distance down the road because the train is in motion so it becomes point B. From the ball bouncers perspective of the train, nothing has changed. He can still bounce the ball in 2 seconds.

This is the simple version of the formula. However, no 2 objects in this universe are stationary. You may think your standing still, but your actually traveling at 9.8 meters/second squared at all times. That is the force of gravity which the earth has and keeps you from floating off into space. That gravity is a combination of the speed at which the earth circles the sun and also rotates on it's axis.

So from this one can assume that Island has a different gravitational constant then the rest of the planet. It is actually traveling along at a faster rate than the rest of the planet. How is this possible? Magnetic disturbances are known to cause small alterations in gravimetric fields. Apply eneough magnetic force and you add to the acceleration of the mass so it would actually be gravity + magnetic pull. In essence you change the force of gravity holding you down. Now even a fractional change can cause a huge time distortion. 9.8 vs 9.81 over a long period of time can cause large time distortion. So everything outside the Island is moving along at 9.8 m/s^2 while the island is moving along slightly faster (it has more pull, you will fall faster to the ground on the island than off).

Now this theory holds water until you reach the speed of light. At that point the maximum possible speed has been reached and the distortion of time gets thrown out the window. Assuming the sat phones are sending optical pulses of digital packets to the satellite which then beams it back down, all this is occurring at the speed of light so communication is not affected by the islands unique gravity

I found this lost scene from LOST on a web-site. Enjoy!

The Fence Scene
From "The Economist"

MILES
What is this?

SAYID
A Security fence. When activated, the pylons
emit a high pitch frequency that will kill anyone
who passes through it. We used a tree to climb...

MILES raises his hand towards Sayid. He seems to hear something.

MILES
SHHHHHHHHH!!!

SAYID stops and watches MILES as he scans the surroundings, listening intently.

SAYID (Sarcastic)
I'm sorry, are we supposed to be
hearing something?

A beat passes and MILES is suddenly aware that SAYID had spoken to him.

MILES
I'm sorry, what?

KATE is examining the control panel.

KATE
Maybe I can shut it off.

SAYID joins her, bending over to examine the panel.

SAYID
And, how might you do that?

KATE
I saw Juliet do it once.

SAYID (Doubtful)
Without the code?

ANGLE ON MILES. He continues to scan with a slight twitch, similar to when we saw him reading the boys room in Confirmed Dead. Suddenly he walks through the pylons and turns towards an astonished KATE and SAYID.

MILES
Hey, I don't think its on.

KATE
And how did you know that?

MILES
Lucky guess.

MILES turns and walks away. SAYID and KATE exchange puzzled glances and proceed after him.
