Season 2 of Lost has begun! And WOW...
Ok, my wife and I are such addicted dorks. She has been on the phone talking to friends recapping the show... and I've been browsing Lost fan sites reading the message boards for what people noticed. Why are we up at 11:30pm? Don't we know my alarm goes off at 5:15am? Here's some of the details people have gathered from the premier.
First off, excellent start to the season 2. We were all a bit let down by the finale last season (too much unanswered), but they opened this season with a bang. Unfortunately, it means MORE questions, but wow...
On to the interesting tidbits I've cut-and-pasted from the boards. I started to organize them, but there's just too much!
----------
- when we opened, I thought I was looking at a young Jack, but boy was I wrong!! It's INSIDE THE HATCH!!! Damon (show's cocreator) wasn't kidding when he said we'd see it in the first 5 min.
- The song they played at the top of the episode was "Make Your Own Kind of Music" written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Performed by Mama Cass Elliot in 1969.
- Desmond types the NUMBERS into the keyboard... and the > : | face stops beeping....
- Desmond injected a drug from a vial labelled
CR 4-8 15 16-23 42 (the cursed numbers)
"30 ml Multiple Dose Vial"
FOR INJECTION..
RX1 and some small print I can't make out, all the bottles are the same.
There's an octagon shaped symbol on Desmond's drug locker that has a circle in the middle of it and a series of 3 lines inside each edge of the octagon, the outer of each lines is broke in two. I'm sure we'll get a screen cap tomorrow, but the same logo appears on the computer Jack walks up to above the keys on the keyboard. So whoever put in the cabinet for the injections also supplied the computers.
Looks very similar to this:
which is I Ching's "Pa Kua", which basically represents the ever-fluctuating elemental forces of the universe, according to About.com
- Hatch LIGHT = reflecting mirrors and powerspots
The hatch may not / is probably not the only way into the underground bunker. There are to many supplies he has that are more recent than to have been brought in before the hatch was buried. looked like a "cold war" lab testing facility to me
The items in the bunker are from several decades.
- in the beginning it definately seems like there are a number of drawn shades in the bunker, like some form of light is getting in there somehow...
- There was a game board, looked like Go, on Desmond's kitchen table (the booth). Watch when he picks up the dishes and you'll see it. The pieces were round and appeared to be black and white, similar to those found on Adam and Eve.
This was definitely NOT a submarine.
- Larger computers from the 60s; "newer" ones from late 70s/early 80s. The comps look like IBM 360 models or Apple IIs. Programming language could also be Fortran.
- that seems to be a different computer than the one Desmond uses in the first scene... in the first scene he hops out of bed and goes right to the computer, but that doesnt seem to be the case with the one Jack found...
- Technics Turntable (record player for you younguns) from the 70s (notice the LED light and the dots on the side of the platter....telltale 70s Technics)
- Lava Lamp from sometime in the 90s....During the 90s, the Lava Lamp went though a bit of a redesign as other companies began making them. Old lamps from the 60s have blunt tops. This one is more missile shaped and I don't think is that old.
- Front loading Whirlpool Calypso Washer and Dryer from the 2000s
- Modern Tide and Downy bottles on top of the Washer/Dryer
Just because Desmond is in the underground bunker doesn't mean he has been there for the amount of time the items in the bunker have been. Where is desmond getting his supplies from? He is well supplied --- with eggs (perhas peaches), cherries, dish detergent, laundry detergent, drugs, etc. This stuff hasn’t been sitting around for 16 years. So he is getting supplied from somewhere. And I thought the washer and dryer looked new even if everything else seemed 70s. The fact that there are elements shown from many different eras is VERY important....somehow.
Maybe there's an entire underground "city" or something. Desmond might just be the gatekeeper to protect against intruders
- First, very interesting that the entirety of the "living quarters" looks like it was furnished directly out of an Ikea catalog, the electronics are almost all from the mid 60's to late 70's, the kitchen is a hodgepodge, mostly newer. All the construction is concrete with drywall in a few rooms (excercise room for one). Modern switchplates on some walls. Brand spanking new washer/dryer. Newer style showerhead. Despite seeing a few references to it here, there were NO eggs in the blender, just some powder, two cherries and some kind of citrus fruit.
The plumbing, electric and concrete construction of the "tunnel" are all WWII era artifacts, right down to the Westinghouse line switch. On the mural, in addition to all the observations that I've seen here, on the upper left hand corner, there are many stick figures, with a red line pointing to the 108 in the sun. At the magnetic pull place, it looks like that was a corridor that may have led somewhere that Desmond (or somebody else) was in the process of blocking off permanently (it was boarded up, and it had been about 1/8 cemented off, starting from the top with a few buckets of concrete sitting on the floor.
Oh, back to the living quarters: I can't quite tell, but it looks like Desmond is either sleeping in a bunk bed (possibly two people? Maybe ETHAN???), or it's a loft with another living area underneath it. Possible sunlight coming in both by the sleeping area and the dining booth.
- The quarantine warning is on the inside of the hatch. Why would you put he warning inside the room (hatch) that those who are quarantined are already in. You would put the warning on the door that enters into the quarantined area.
In this case, the word quarantine is on the inside of the hatch, leading to the island. Is the island quarantined and not the hatch?
- Besides, why would a quarantined person have a cache of weapons in his bunker?
- Locke described what pulled him into the hole as "a cloud of black smoke." Kate confirms this.
- confirmed that Hurley was a patient at psych ward with Lenny (another ANSWER, but Why?....), $114 million jackpot won by Hurley in lotto. He specifically says, "When i got out, actually about 5 months after i got out..." when telling Jack about the numbers...
- We saw Walt. He's dripping wet. He also looked much older and taller. And he was wearing different clothes. Wonder if it was just a vision. He sure disapeared fast. He seemed to need to contact Shannon but couldn't talk right. It was like the audio was backwards. Why was he so wet and without his life jacket? He was in a boat. If the Others were there whispering to Shannon it explains why Walt was there but why would the Others bother whispering to Shannon?
- it was kind of clear that it was Vincent who led Shannon to Walt
- it seemed like you could see through Walt when they first showed him? Like he was superimposed over the tree behind him, and when they showed the close-up he seemed solid. I'm thinking he bilocated
- WHAT DID WALT SAY TO SHANNON? She hears the whispers (also, any help on these?) I swear I hear "Shannon:, she looks up and sees "ghostWalt". Well, it gets better. Walt looked like he was suffering a stroke or something... but perhaps that is because the clip is in REVERSE. Here's a reversed audio capture and another version.
To me it sounds like walt is saying "don't press the button, the button is bad." Sounds reminescent of his warning to them about the hatch. I believe he said, "Don't open the hatch. The hatch is bad!"
Could it be the 'Execute' button Jack almost pushed? no computer i know of has an execute button, but maybe it's a special old school government thing. and didn't he press "execute" in the beginning after he put the code thing in? Or could TPTB be implying a double meaning, something more sinister, like to execute/kill someone? I think the "execute" button has something to do with the security device. That Des is in charge of it.
- noises while Kate was "taken"? any help? happened really fast, couldn't think, was waiting for sword slicing sounds and the whispers like the "teaser", but it was TOTALLY different!
- Light when Kate was taken
- So Jack's future wife/fiance Sarah killed someone in that accident. When the paramedics bring the SUV driver in, they say "Adam Rutherford, 57, no chest sounds". Then Jack tells another doctor to "take care of Mr. Rutherford". That doctor responds that he can't intibate. He died at 8:15 (the numbers again)
Now, here's the BIG connection. Shannon's last name is Rutherford. We already knew that Shannon Rutherford's father married Boone's mother, and that at some point, Shannon's father died. Now we know, most likely, that Adam Rutherford is Shannon's father, and that he was in an accident with Jack's future fiancee, Sarah in which he sustained fatal injuries.
The scene is no more than 12 years ago:
Shannon says she's 20.
Shannon and Boone were 8 & 10 when they became steps.
Shannon's dad married Boone's mom, then died in this fb
- Another theory is that the Rutherford guy is Shannon's husband, not father. Remember, Boone said she was married in "Hearts and Minds": "She was married. She's not married anymore, and that has nothing to do with this. Rutherford is her father's name. Our parents got married when I was 10, she was 8." But that's only speculation that she went back to her maiden name. Who is to say she changed her name back to her maiden name? She could have very well kept the name she had then-her married name.
In "Do No Harm" Sara says while making the toast:
"A little over two years ago, I blew a tire out. Flipped over the center divider into oncoming traffic and was hit head-on by a SUV."
So I doubt the wedding flashback is that far back in his life. It was probably very close to his father's death. Which would make it seem like Rutherford was her husband, not her father
- Adam Rutherford... Adam & Eve? (the corpes in the cave)
- Anyone catch the shot of Jack's watch (happens really fast, but they do stop long enough, if you can frameframe it) during the surgery. What does his watch read?
- Anyway, I was just going through my DVD trying to edit out all the commercials and got to the flashback where they briefly focus on Jack's ID badge and decided to pause and get closer to the TV. It's tough to see as it's only momentarily in focus (and perhaps someone with high def or some other really clear picture can jump in here) but the first line has his name, and the second has a word (which I can't make out - this is where I'm hoping someone will jump in) and the number 41.
- Christian (Jack's dad) gives the idea of HOPE to Jack, this is something Jack lacks, Kate knew he didn't think they'd be alright. But he's getting better.
- the flashback looks like it is late 70s/early 80s, based on Jack's hair
- she wakes up at 2:30.. " Am I alive ?"
- 8 month recovery for Sara (clock is 2:30), who apparently Jack is gonna steal from this guy Kevin (whose name is revealed later and who apparently abandons Sara when Jack tells him she is paralyzed), and I think we may see him interfere in Jack's marriage. Either before, during, and/or after the wedding - they did cut sharply away from Jack' wedding flashback in S1, maybe there's more to this scene....
- We find out Desmond's name. FYI, Desmond is an Irish name. It simply means from south Munster. Now we've got a Brit, a Frenchie, an Aussie, a couple of Koreans, an Irishman, a Canadian and a bunch of Yanks.
- Did anybody notice whether Jack had his tatoos in the flashback? I think there were shots of his bare shoulders while he was running.
- Desmond tells Jack he's in a race around the world. Somehow that is significant
- anyone catch what aisle # Jack trips and falls while racing Desmond up the stadium stairs. Then Des goes on to coerce Jack into "fixing" Sara. "What if you could fix her?"....."You don't believe in miracles?" says Des to Jack....this is HUGE!!!
- Did anyone catch what Desmond last said to Jack at the end of their conversation in the stadium - "See you in another life"? Reminds me of Nadia's writing on Sayid's photo "ill see you in the next life"
- note the sneakers as Jack begins to explore the Hatch.
- Magnet pulling Jack's guncase key. THAT MAGNET IS PROBABLY THE THING THAT THROWS THE COMPASSES OFF ON THE ISLAND!!!!!!!!
- We enter a MASSIVE control room with lots of REALLY OLD computers.
- Numbers 16 and 42 were on that painting/mural in the hatch. Also 108 (which is the sum of all the numbers together). Also says: my sick.., JD (Desmond).
- a freeze frame advance on the sequence where Jack's looking at the mural. There are three shots: The initial discovery, a shot of Jack's face, and then another shot of the mural as Jack looks down to the paints. In the third shot, if you freeze and follow Jack's light, you'll see a picture of an eye, then the letter m, and then the word sick just below the m.
Put it together: Eye M Sick... I am sick!
I also saw pictures of houses, a face, an arrow pointing up(possibly to the above ground?) stick figures, and fish symbols. The only numbers on the mural were 42 and 108.
- basically it shows the island with a sun in the middle. There are a bunch of stick figures and an eye. there are a bunch of 4 lines that have a slash through them to like keep track of a score. There is a mad person. There is the word sick...
- DESMOND holds Locke at gunpoint, as Jack realizes who it is. And what about Locke? He seemed to think it was OK that some Scottish guy was holding a gun to his head. And what happened to Kate? Yeh, Locke said that it was OK - but should we trust him on this? He never told the truth about Boone.
First off, excellent start to the season 2. We were all a bit let down by the finale last season (too much unanswered), but they opened this season with a bang. Unfortunately, it means MORE questions, but wow...

unbelievable...
I am so lucky to be married to you -- thanks for the researching!
Wow, that is a LOT of information. You are an addict!
My buddy has a great theory. Writer is a Yankee fan. Thus the Red Sox comments, Aaron born at same time Boone dies (Yankee Aaron Boone hits home run to knock Sox out playoffs in '03), and the numbers are all Yankee greats who's numbers have been retired, including Thurmon Munson, who died in plane crash!
