Lost, Episode 2x18: Dave

Wow... that was a weird episode. I'm not quite sure what to think of it yet, and since I'm too tired to stay up browsing the boards, here are a few random thoughts. I'll add more tomorrow.

* so, Hurley feels responsible for the deaths of a couple people when he was #23 on a crowded deck built to support only 8 (like those numbers?)

* Hurley has an imaginary friend named Dave. I saw this one coming real early in the episode.

* Funny scene with Hurley beating up on Sawyer, all the while repeating the nicknames he's called him through the episodes.

* Sawyerism of the night: "I got enough food to open up a mini-mart. You think Sayid needs a job?"

* Sayid is losing it. What good will it do to kill Henry?

* I'm betting Eko is building a church. Everyone catch him doing the sign of the cross from the water?

* Locke sure panicked at the suggestion of the wheelchair, didn't he? That character has been built up and beaten down in succession more than any of the others.

* Nothing like a leaf-full of peanut butter to make you feel better.

* Listening to Hurley and Dave talk on the island about how the whole island thing being Hurley's imagination sounded like the writers toying with the raving theorists of this show.

* Same thing with "Henry" saying ...."noone can see them, not even God" in response to Locke saying "God only knows how long you people have been here". That's blantantly toying with the theorists about it being Purgatory (or Hell).

* Ditto for Henry telling with Locke about the hatch and entering the numbers, how he didn't do anything and it made a loud noise "like a magnet". That plays to the electromagnetic theorists.

* Then we have Dave jumping off the cliff right after saying "See you in another life, eh?"

* Nice twist at the end with Libby being a patient. I did NOT see that one. I thought they were going to show her as a Doctor in the hospital. Pretty chilling, too, seeing her distant glazed expression after kissing Hurley. There's more to this.

* End result of the night... you have no idea which way is up. Is it all in Hurley's head? Is it all in Libby's head? Are they on the island or not? Fun stuff...

LOST – S2-E18 – “Dave” – Hurley-centric

Quotes:

1. “It’s not my metabolism. I’m sick.” – Hurley to Libby
2. “Hurley, you can trust me.” – Libby to Hurley
3. Who were you looking for out there?” – Libby to Hurley
4. “Dave’s the most normal person in this place.” - Hurley to Dr. Brooks
5. “No wheelchair!” – Locke to Jack and Kate
6. “How did Henry Gale write a note to his wife with a broken neck?” – Sayid to unHenry.
7. “What are you building? It’s not a Starbucks, is it?” – Charlie to Mr. Eko
8. “You’re NOT here.” – Hurley to Dave
9. “Did either of you guys see a guy running through here in a bathrobe with a coconut?” – Hurley to Charlie and Mr. Eko
10. “No, I saw a polar bear on roller skates with a mango.” – Charlie to Hurley
11. “What do you mean – get out of here?” – Hurley to Dave
12. “Dude, lay low, man. The revolution has begun. When the time is right, we fly.” – Dave to Hurley
13. “What stuff you seeing?” – Sawyer to Hurley
14. “I’m NOT crazy.” – Hurley to Sawyer
15. “Don’t you have an adventure to get to? I think Timmy fell down a well over that way.” – Sawyer to Kate
16. “No one lives in the caves anymore.” – Hurley to Libby
17. “If I wasn’t so fat, they wouldn’t have died.” – Hurley to Dr. Brooks
18. “There were 23 people on that deck. It was built to hold 8.” – Dr. Brooks to Hurley
19. “You never stopped eating because that’s how you punish yourself.” – Dr. Brooks to Hurley
20. “You ever hear of Kinko’s? Photoshop? Do you really think that they blew up the Death Star?” – Dave to Hurley
21. “Tippy-toe, big buy. Vamanos.” – Dave to Hurley
22. “Bye, Dave” – Hurley to Dave
23. “You got peanut butter on it.” – Dave to Hurley
24. “It’s gonna get a little worse before it gets better.” – Dave to Hurley
25. “You’re still at Santa Rosa, man. You never left the hospital.” – Dave to Hurley
26. “So, this is all in my brain?” – Hurley to Dave
27. “Did you get caught on purpose?” – Locke to unHenry
28. “God doesn’t know how long we’ve been here.” – unHenry to Locke
29. “Maybe you should do it one more time. Just to be sure.” – Hurley to Libby

Random Thoughts (Flashback events):
1. I agreed with Kevin that I was thinking right away that Dave was all in Hurley’s mind. Right away I thought of the movie “A Beautiful Mind.”
2. They mentioned that Hurley was sent to Santa Rosa by his mom after the accident. I was surprised that they actually told us in the same episode what that accident was. I almost cried when Hurley told the story about the deck, I felt so sorry for him.
3. It was great to see Leonard again and he looks exactly the same as the other time when Hurley came to visit him. I thought that he would notice when Hurley snuck a graham cracker.
4. Great final scene with Libby as a patient. I kept scouring the background searching for her helping another patient, but this was quite a shocker.

Random Thoughts (Island events):
1. I was surprised when Hurley threw away all the food. I thought that he would give it away to the other passengers. Hurley had a great defeated look on his face when he saw the newest batch of food.
2. Every time that Sayid gets close to getting answers from unHenry, someone stops him. I don’t believe that he was going to shoot unHenry, he was just going to scare him. Maybe shoot a bullet close to him (or wound him) but not kill him. He still has too much information that they need.
3. unHenry has been down there more than a week now and it looks like his bruises on his face are worse. Maybe Sayid and Ana-Lucia beat him up some more during this latest fiasco.
4. What is Mr. Eko building? Hopefully, we will see before the last show of the season.
5. It was nice to hear Hurley and Sawyer mention the tree frog incident. At the time it happened, I think everyone was wondering why it was important. It was nice to see Hurley put Sawyer in his place and repeating all the nicknames that Sawyer used on him for the past season and a half (“Jabba, Lardo, Staypuff”).
6. Locke was adamant about not using the wheelchair. But didn’t they burn that wheelchair in the big fire (when they buried the bodies)? I could be wrong.
7. unHenry offered few answers and gave us more questions. Did he really not input the numbers? Apparently, Zeke is a nobody (in terms of the hierarchy of the Others) or is that a lie? unHenry was also scared of a “he” if he found out – but who is that?
8. Great to see Hurley and Libby together, but the questions remain of what her true intentions are. Des she really care about Hurley? Is she reaching out to a familiar face? Is she an Other? Will we see her back story?

Previews for next week:
1. Jack and Kate go out into the woods to find / confront Zeke and the others and it starts raining (what a surprise). It looks like it will be an intense episode. I thought that I read that next week will show back stories of Rose and Bernard but then I also heard that Jack and Kate will have a back story (or one of them at least), so we’ll see.
2. Here is the schedule for next few weeks:

April 12, 2006: S.O.S. (Bernard and Rose – centric??)
Sparks between Jack and Kate are rekindled when they venture into the jungle together to propose a "trade" with the Others; Bernard (Sam Anderson) wants to devise an SOS signal, but Rose (L. Scott Caldwell) thinks it's a terrible idea; and Locke begins to question his faith. Henry Gale: Michael Emerson. Isaac: Wayne Pygram.

Ugh - two weeks of reruns!

May 3, 2006: Two for the Road

May 10, 2006: ? (that's the actual title)

Ugh - another week of reruns!

May 24, 2006: Lost

Saywerisms - Here are some of the nicknames that Sawyer used:
Referring to Hugo – “Deep Dish”
Referring to Kate – “Freckles”
Referring to Charlie – “Tattoo”, “Babynapper”
Referring to Libby – “Moonbeam”

Even though Dave is not real notice as he jumps off the cliff he says "see you in another life" which is a quote from Desmond. But Hurley does not know about this quote so how could Dave? This hints that Dave may be a little bit more than just a hallucination. The phrase is also similar to what was written on the back of Nadia's picture which said "I will see you again in this life or the next."
