Lost, Episode 3.01: A Tale of Two Cities
This series had slipped a bit for me last season and I really needed it to start strong to win me back, especially after getting hooked on new shows such as Heroes and Friday Night Lights. Well, mission accomplished with flying colors. Good grief! We were tense the entire episode and have no idea where the show is going. Consider that a good thing.
MSNBC's recap
Lots of pictures of the episode here.
Random thoughts:
The opening scene feels a lot like the past couple season premiers (focusing on eyes, etc.) We see Juliette trying to compose herself, fighting back tears, etc.
Wild stuff with the opening scenes in the Dharma village seeing the plane break up, and seeing all the old "Others" -- Ethan, Goodwin, etc.
The book club was reading Stephen King's Carrie. unHenry/Ben obviously has some tension with Juliette.
Very interesting that Jack, Kate and Sawyer were in vastly different holding areas.
I'll have to check again, but I seem to recall we see Jack and Kate both pulling off bandaids where they received some medicine, but I don't remember seeing Sawyer with one.
How did Juliette get between the Hydra station and the zoo area where she shot Sawyer? Same person? Time lapse? Twin? We do know her character is one tough cookie.
What happened to the dude from the other cage who tried to get Sawyer to escape?
What did unHenry (now we know as Ben) do to Kate? They made it a point to show her wrist marks. Has her "next two weeks will be very unpleasant" already started? Did they tell her what was going to happen? Obviously she didn't eat her food on the beach.
Love the line when Sawyer figures out how to get the food when the guy tells him "only took the bears 2 hours". Wonder if it's the polar bears...
Very interesting story line on Jack and Sarah and how he was contesting the divorce and suspecting his dad of having the affair with her. Also interesting Jack's rage draws his dad back into drinking, after being clean 50 days... which we know eventually leads to his demise.
Chilling about them knowing everything about Jack and that exchange between Ben and Juliette where we see they are breaking him.
Can't wait for next week. Guess I'll have to figure out a different show to drop off my list!

Man, I thought last night's show was so suspenseful. It was very intense. I liked the beginning. I wonder what the tension is with Ben and Juliette. I think that Jack will crack her and try to play her against him like Ben did Locke and Jack.
I also think that Jack will somehow be able to watch Sawyer and Kate and them not know as part of his torture.
I thought it was very interesting when Juliette said, "It is not important who we were, but who we are".
It was really good, but not as good as Heroes! :)
We are Back! It is good to have the whole gang back together again for yet another year of LOST question and answer session.
During the opening scene, I had to pause and just look at my wife with astonishment. I LOVE IT! This is how they keep you coming back ...
Even thought I know the Jack, Kate, Sawyer story is going to get very interesting ... I hope they don't leave all of our favorite LOST characters out this season. Give me more Hurley ...
I am sure as I scroll the message boards over the weekend, I will have more to share. For now, I will let the comments do their thing.
Thanks, Brice
LOST – S3-E01 – “A Tale of Two Cities” – Jack-centric
Quotes:
1. “Kate, the next two weeks will be very unpleasant.” – unHenry/Ben (Benry) to Kate
2. “Ben wouldn’t even read this in the bathroom” – Adam to Juliet regarding Juliet’s choice for the Book Club – Stephen King’s “Carrie”
3. “Believe me, you’re not my type.” Tom (Mr. Friendly) to Kate
4. “What has happened with Sawyer and Jack?” – Kate to Tom and then later to Benry
5. “It’s now who you are, it’s who you’re not.” – Sarah to Jack
6. “I’m a repo man.” – Jack to Juliet
7. “So, you make the sandwiches?” – Jack to Juliet
8. “Now you have to something to fix.” – Sarah to Jack
9. “It is not important who we were, but who we are.” – Juliet to Jack
10. “Hey, you got yourself a fish biscuit.” – Tom to Sawyer
11. “It only took the bears two hours.” - Tom to Sawyer
12. “How many of them were there?” – Sawyer to Tom
Random Thoughts (Flashback events):
1. Very sad flashback with Jack breaking up with Sarah and then fighting with his father.
2. How terrible Jack must feel that he was the one that turned his father back to alcohol because he would not believe him.
3. The song Jack listens to in his car radio while watching Sarah at her school is “Moonlight Serenade”, the same song Hurley and Sayid picked up on the radio in "The Long Con."
4. During Jack's first flashback, the time on his pager is 7:15:23AM. Jack completed the New York Times crossword in pen! I couldn’t make out the date of the paper.
5. How wild was it when Jack was dialing the numbers and his father’s cell phone rang!
Random Thoughts (Island events):
1. Great beginning and some great possibilities for some “Others” flashbacks. Can you believe how freaking big that island is?
2. unHenry/Ben (new name will be “Benry”) told Goodwin that he could run to the Tail section in an hour and to bring back lists of names in 3 days. That’s incredibly close. Why? Has a plane crashed before? Everyone seemed to know what needed to be done. Interesting.
3. Juliet was holding a Stephen King book while talking with Benry. Later on, when Locke gives Benry Dostoevsky, Benry asks if he has any Stephen King. Cute.
4. The book “Carrie” is about a girl who has been under the thumb of a manipulative and domineering parent suddenly discovers she has power. Hmmm.
5. The CD that Juliet places in her stereo is actually a dual disc CD/DVD with the serial of "JN 94743". This serial belongs to the album "Okemah and the Melody of Riot", by artist "Son Volt"[1]. This album was released in 2005 (but the plane crashed in September, 2004???). The CD is taken from the jewel case for the album "Speaking In Tongues" by artist "Talking Heads". But the song Juliet listens to as she gets ready for her book club meeting is “Downtown” by Petula Clark. [Information from Lostpedia]
6. The breakfast scene between Benry and Kate reminded me of the scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” where the bad guy, Belloq, tries to wine and dine Marion in the tent. He also had her wear a dress. And how much torture will Benry inflict based upon his own torture from Jack, Sayid, Ana, etc.?
7. Great moment when Jack hears his father’s voice on the intercom telling Jack to “Let it go.” Was Jack hallucinating due to the shot and dehydration?
8. The name of the station where Jack was being held was called The Hydra. Did Juliet say that sharks and dolphins are housed there, or just dolphins? If sharks are there, too, then it would explain the Dharma brand on the tail of the shark in Season 2.
9. I’m guessing that the Sawyer’s cage is close to the Hydra since Juliet found him right away when he tried to escape.
10. Was Karl (the other prisoner) a member of the Others? If not, then where did he come from? From the plane? From another plane? A boat?
11. If the emergency button in the Hydra station drains the water, why didn’t Benry or Juliet just push it when Jack opened the door? And how evil was Benry for locking Juliet in the station with Jack? Or was it part of a plan to get Jack to trust Juliet? Or was Benry mad at Juliet for kicking him out of the book club?
12. That was quite a lot of paperwork that Juliet had on Jack. See, kids, when your parents tell you that something will go on your permanent record, you better believe them. I wonder if it’s all a bluff or if they have dossiers on everyone else, too.
13. Who else thought that Jack would ask Juliet who Sarah left him for? It was so sweet that he only asked if Sarah is happy.
Previews for next week:
1. Sayid organizing a search party.
2. Benry finding out about Desmond’s boat and wanting it.
3. It will be a Sun and Jin flashback.
Tonight's episode by the numbers:
2 – number of weeks that will be unpleasant for Kate
2 – number of hours that it took the bears to figure out the food contraption
Sawyer Names
Kate – “Freckles”
Karl – “Chachi”
Two more quick thoughts:
(1) You might not have seen Sawyer's bandaid because he wasn't injected (or had blood drawn like Michael), or because he was wearing long sleeves and he hadn't noticed it yet or we just didn't see it.
(2) If you watched the new show "The Nine" last night, then you probably have another new show to add to your list of must-sees. It was pretty good, but I hope they answer some of the questions sooner than Lost. ;-)
Entertainment Weekly has posted their recap here.

Other thoughts...
As the camera pulls back from the OTHERS micro community you see a single white dove flying. This is not the first time a white dove has been seen. In a dream sequence by Charlie he also saw a white Dove. The Dove is also the symbol for the holy sprit in Christianity.
The opening sequence is kind of like the opposite of the season two opener.
season two opening episode:
Desmond looks like he is in a home but in reality we quickly learn he is in the hatch
Desmond plays music on a record
season three opening episode
Juliet looks like she is in a house in America but in reality we quickly learn that she is in a micro community on the island.
Juliet plays music on a CD. The song is called DOWNTOWN.
The title of this episode refers of course to the classic book by Charles Dickens which opens with "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity." But more than that, the title may refer to the two different camps of THE OTHERS and the LOSTaways. Also, being a novel, it may have something to do with the book club seen at the beginning of the episode.
