Lost, episode 3x07: Not in Portland

Ok, I've received some email criticism for not having a Lost blog up already, so here is a quick blog. We watched the episode late last night so I didn't get around to putting up a blog. I didn't take a full long hour today, so I didn't have time to put together anything spiffy, so here's a couple links and a few random comments. Feel free to comment away and I'll try to respond and add more later.

Random thoughts:
I liked this episode a lot -- perhaps not as great as some of those articles had hyped it, but it was definitely among the better from this season thus far.
I love Juliet's back story and how you see she's not as heartless as she's been portrayed thus far. I imagine 3 yrs on the island can definitely change you!
I totally saw the bus scene coming. I told my wife "oh, he's a goner" as soon as Juliet said that thing about maybe her ex could get hit by a bus. Now I can't say I saw it coming that he'd actually get hit by a bus.
How about that Clockwork Orange type of scene with Carl? That was pretty creepy. Notice how Sawyer started to go into a trance watching the film? Wonder if that is significant?
So Alex is Ben's daughter... Or at least she was raised as his daughter. Interesting twist.
Speaking of Ben... how creapy was it that he woke up during his surgery?

Yes, I think Lost is back... which unfortunately means it brings up more and more questions onto its huge stack!

Random thoughts and notes:

Mittelos is an anagram for “Lost Time".

Juliet says she has been on the island for 3 years, 2 months, and 28 days ago, which would make her arrival time September 5th, 2001.

Rachel is the name of Jacob's wife in the Book of Genesis. Rachel was disgraced because she had bore no children to Jacob, but her sister and second wife of Jacob, Leah, bore six children (Genesis 30). In the end, God grants Rachel a son, Joseph (essentially restoring her honor). Rachel in the Bible actually bore Joseph and Benjamin (the youngest of Jacob's sons), but Joseph was favored because he was older.

Edmund Burke was hit by a bus with the Apollo logo on the side.

Back-to-back episodes with the same flashback city. “I Do” had Kate and her husband living in Miami – unknown time period, “Not in Portland” had Juliet and her sister living in Miami in the summer of 2001.

Side note: Juliet's husband, Edmund Burke, has the same name as an 18th-century British politician and writer who was known as sympathetic to the American Revolution and critical of the French Revolution. Can you see any significance to that, or to the fact that both Lost and Grey's Anatomy have physician characters named Burke and Shepard (though McDreamy spells his last name Shepherd)?

The Star Wars reference was great. "The Wookie prisoner gag." However, it didn't end there. Carl was in the last cell, number 23. Princess Leia, who was rescued by the "Wookie Prisoner gag", her cell number? "AA23".

Also, if Carl was in cell 23, exactly how many cells are in that prison? What are they being used for? Are there other people in them? The children from the Tail section? Ohhh, my head. ;-)

Words from the “A Clockwork Orange”-type mind control film:
• Plant a good seed and you will joyfully gather fruit.
• Everything changes.
• We are the causes of our own suffering.
• God loves you as he loved Jacob.
• Think about your life.

Jacob is the only person in Old Testament Scripture whom God said He "loved". (Malachi 1:23, "...I loved Jacob, and I hated Esau...", also quoted in Romans).

Sawyer Nicknames:

Kate – Freckles
Juliet – Sister
Alex – Sheena, Underdog, Lollipop
Karl - Cheech

Bizarre cross-flashback theory:
Juliet's sister, Rachel, may be the pregnant woman that Jack's father killed during his drunken surgery. This is highly unlikely since Rachel lived in Miami and Dr. Shepherd worked in Los Angeles. Still, that would be an interesting twist, right? ;-)

I thought it was good to learn more about Juliette. I do wonder if there will be any implications because she impregnated male mice. Could that be involved in some of their experiments and why they wanted Claire's baby.

I still want to know what happened to Walt when he was there, why they want the kids, and what "history" Ben and Juliette share.

Alpert tells Juliet that he wants her to come work for their company because they think she is special. Yet another reference to the specialness which we have seen before. In the interview, Juliet says that her husband would respond to being hit by a bus which later actually happens. Did this happen because Juliet willed it to happen, because she can see the future, or is it just a coincidence? With the new ability of Desmond being able to see the future, it may be that. So that still leaves the question -- Did Alpert choose Juliet because of her specialness or because of her fertility work or both?

This episode marks the first time that an OTHER has killed another OTHER.
