Lost, Episode 9.07: The Other 48 Days

Well, what did you guys think? Kristen was scared by it. We both enjoyed it. I was expecting some gruesome stuff, not "just" abductions. It skimmed through much of the progressions, but what can you expect when it tells their story in one night, whereas it took 31 episodes to tell that story for the main group. Can't wait to see next week's episode...

Here's the next few episodes:

Episode 33 (2.08): Collision (a.k.a.Old Habits)
Airdate: November 23, 2005
Ana-Lucia-centric. Violece erupts when Ana Lucia and her group stumble upon the other castaways.

Episode 34 (2.09): What Kate Did
Airdate: November 30, 2005
Kate's original crime that started her life on the run is revealed. Meanwhile, the survivors lay one of their own to rest, Kate sleeplessly watches over a feverish Sawyer, Locke and Eko make an interesting discovery about the film, Mr. Eko has a surprise for Locke regarding the hatch, and Michael has a mysterious encounter with the computer.

Episode 35 (2.10): Merged
Airdate: December 14, 2005

Episode 36 (2.11): The Hunting Party
Airdate: January 11, 2006

I got really scared watching it too. I thought they did a good job of explaining so much in a short time, but there was definitely details I missed. Did you think it answered many questions about the Others? I have even more questions about Ecko and Ana Lucia. It was a good episode, but to me it definitely opened the plot for more twists ahead.

I'll kick things off with a few quick observations...

We see Ana-Lucia did shoot Shannon. Or at least it looks that way. Then again, in the preview for next week we see her say 'I killed someone he loved, He's gonna come after me' or something like that. But, she said last week she only had one bullet left and in the teaser for next week, she shoots again at Sayid. Huh? Something still doesn't add up. Perhaps it's Sayid's gun?

Mr. Eko is my new favorite character. He obviously the parallel to Locke. Both are savvy and tough. Both are men of faith. Mr. Eko mentioned several times about praying. He also went into a period of silence for 40 days after killing the two men that first night. They show him picking up that Bible. Anyone else think of the Nigerian priests from the plane Boone was fatally injured on? And what was he carving on his stick? Notches for the 40 days he was on his prayer vigil (or whatever it was)?

What's up with the glass eye in that chest in the bunker? As one poster on a message board noted, it reminds me of Locke saying "I saw into the eye of this island" though that was just metaphorical.

We confirm it WAS the other survivors who talked to Boone on the radio.

The Ana-Lucia face off with Goodwin is certainly worth discussing. She's had direct conversation with one of "The Others" about the fact they are "others". Can't wait to read a transcript of that part of the show. And she was dang cool about it -- handing him the knife, etc. She is definitely tough.

More later... post away!

I thought this show was really good, too. About the Ana/Goodwin face-off, I thought it was interesting when Ana was talking to Goodwin about Nathan and Goodwin said something about how Nathan wasn't "good" anyway...that's why he wasn't on the list. Wonder what that means and why only "good" people are on the list?

I agree with you about Eko, Kevin. New favorite character. It's funny, too, because when he first threw Sawyer, Michael, and Jin in the pit I was hoping they would be able to shoot him. Funny how your perception can change.

LOST - S2E6 – “The Other 48 Days”

First off, this was a great show. I really did miss seeing Sawyer, Hurley, Jack, Locke, and the others but I got a better understanding of the paranoia of the Tail-ies. No wonder they don’t trust anybody. I cannot wait to see the backgrounds of Mr. Ecko, Bernard (and Rose), Libby, Cindy and, yes, even Ana-Lucia (which will happen next week).

Great opening shot of the tail section falling into the water. We got to meet the Tail-ies we know plus a couple of the kids and two others named Nathan and Goodwin. And when I say others, I really mean “Others.” What a great twist. I totally did not see that coming. I mean, I knew that Nathan would die. He was wearing a red shirt.* But I didn’t suspect Goodwin at all.

Very cool about the abductions during the first night and I bet Mr. Ecko’s backstory will show how he defended the camp. Also liked how Libby set that guy’s broken leg (ouch!) on Day 1. Too bad he died a couple of days later. Great scene around the campfire on Day 12 when the kids were abducted. Got another shot of the Teddy Bear. Group leaves the beach and head towards the jungle. After a couple of days, A-L wants to keep moving but Goodwin wants to make camp. All others agree. Tail-ies discuss not seeing Nathan on the plane and him not talking about himself at all. A-L dug a pretty good size hole in just 2-3 days for Nathan. On Day 23, Goodwin helps Nathan out of the hole and then kills him by breaking his neck.

Going into the jungle again, the Tail-ies discover the second hatch. This one has a Dharma logo with an arrow. Inside they find a trunk with supplies including a radio, glass eye and a bible. A-L and Goodwin travel to high ground to test the radio. Goodwin borrows the knife from A-L (that scene was tense) to cut open a tomato. A-L wonders why the “Other” woman that she killed was bare foot but carried a 20-year old US Army knife. After determining that Goodwin was not on the plane and Goodwin admitting to killing Nathan, A-L and Goodwin battle until A-L stabs that big stick in his chest.

On Day 41, Bernard picks up Boone on the radio (it was great to hear him again) and tries to respond but A-L is completely paranoid by now, so she shuts off the radio. While she is crying by the stream, Mr. Ecko comes and comforts her. On Day 45, Libby and Cindy see Jin on the beach and take him back to their camp. Later they find Sawyer and Michael. Next couple of days see: Guys in the hole, A-L drops in, everybody out, Sawyer passes out, rain storm, A-L accidentally shoots Shannon, Sayid is mad. End of story.

Next week’s episode looks like it will be very intense as well when we finally get the two groups together. In addition to the tense scenes with A-L and Sayid, I hope that there are equally touching scenes with Bernard and Rose and Sin and Jin. I just can’t wait!

Quotes:
“I will pray for her.” – Mr. Ecko
“Where are the kids?” – Ana-Lucia
“I’m going to cut off Nathan’s finger tomorrow.” – Ana-Lucia
“The children are fine.” – Goodwin
“We’re safe here now.” – Ana-Lucia
“We’re the survivors from Flight 815.” – Bernard
“It’s been 40 days.” – Mr. Ecko
“It’s going to be okay.” – Mr. Ecko

Questions / Comments:
1. Was one of the bodies that Mr. Ecko dragged from the ocean his wife?
2. Did Mr. Ecko kill the two “Others’ during the first night’s abduction?
3. Did Mr. Ecko keep silent for 40 days because of religious reasons?
4. What was Mr. Ecko notching on his stick? A countdown for 40 days?
5. How many graves were on the beach? I counted 8 or 9.
6. How many “Others” came back to steal the 9 kids?
7. Did Ana-Lucia kill that “Other” with a rock?
8. Did nobody remember not seeing Goodwin on the plane, either?
9. How did the stewardess Cindy end up in the Tail section if she was chasing Charlie through the front of the plane when he was heading towards the bathroom? I’m gonna have to go back and watch the episode from Season 1 again. Maybe she doesn’t chase him all the way to the front of the plane.
10. Who gave the banana to Nathan? Mr. Ecko or Bernard?
11. Ana-Lucia says that she has no kids, but there’s a backstory there.
12. Did everyone catch the word “Quarantine” on the back of the Hatch side-door?

* - The Red Shirt comment comes from the fact that, on the old Star Trek TV series, the non-important characters always wore a red shirt and were always getting killed whenever they battled with the aliens. As you recall, Boone wore a red shirt last year while he was searching the Nigerian plane and found the radio – right before the plane capsized and crushed him.

When Ana-Lucia says "I killed someone he loved" it could also mean Nadia. Remember the CIA was tailing Nadia and it seems that Ana-Lucia has some sort of military/combat training. She is obviously an expert at interrogation. Two things she has in common with Sayid. Has she crossed paths with him in the past? Seems that everyone else has an interconnected backstory so I guess we'll just have to wait to see.

Another interesting parallel - Jack was wearing a black & white suit when they crashed and he rushed out to save people. Ditto for Mr. Eko.

As for reunions, I can't wait to see Bernard and Rose find each other again. It will be a two hankie moment for sure!

Lastly, did anyone else notice that the whispers always seem to show up when Sawyer is around?

A few more notes from last night's episode (gotten from other message boards):

Nathan wasn't an Other. Goodwin explained that he was afraid that when AL cut off Nathan's finger that he would still contiune to deny being an Other and she would believe that Nathan wasn't a spy. That's why he killed Nathan.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Libby mentioned she dropped out of Medical School after a year. Didn't Desmond also mention he dropped out of Medical School (mentioned in the stadium with Jack).
This may be a stretch, but is it a connection? Is Libby the woman in the Hatch photo with Desmond?

Earlier in the series, Libby told Michael that there were originally 23 survivors in the tail section. 12 total were abducted, Goodwin and Nathan died, and then that guy with serious injuries (Donald?) also died. In addition, five survived (Eko, Ana-Lucia, Bernard, Cindy and Libby). Three other tail-ies had already died before Donald. Libby told Ana that he would be the fourth to go.

Am I the only one that is bothered that they did not hear anything from the other side of the island, especially gun shots/dynamite/crashing planes? In the wilderness the sounds would have carried for miles, especially when Sawyer took down the polar bear on the hillside.

Kim,
Ooooooo, I like the possibility that Ana Lucia had something to do with the Sayid/Nadia backstory. Very interesting!

Okay Kevin and Kristen...I'm posting for the first time! Great comment about AL being possibly linked with Nadia and Sayid. And I also wondered why didn't each end of the plane hear the others crash? It can't be that big of an island. Why did the "Others" zero in on the tailies and not the front planers??? Was the invisible "monster" as I call it protecting that half of the island from the "others" (Remember the referred to it as a security measure.)It didn't seem that the tailies had encountered it yet?
