Lost, Episode 2.10: The 23rd Psalm

Welcome back, Lost! Although not a "holy cow!", end with a shocker kinda episode, this one was enjoyable.

As always, Entertainment Weekly has a good recap, but here are a few of my random observations/discussion points:

* Mr. Eko's back story was very interesting. Now we know why he's such a tough cookie. Very interesting to see how he sacrificed his future to save his brother as a child, and Charlie's comments how it was his brother's fault he got hooked on drugs
* we see Eko's staff up close and see it's covered in scripture; I love Charlie's comment about "what, you gonna beat me with your Bible stick?"
* Eko's fearless encounter with the monster; you can't help but compare this to Locke's first encounter in season one where he stared it down. Difference was Locke was in awe , whereas I didn't see that in Eko.

* wild stuff about the plane containing his brother and fellow drug-runner. Many had speculated Eko would be connected to that plane, but it was cool to see it tie together. I'm still not clear on the timeline on how old Eko was when the plane left vs. how long its been on the island.
* Charlie and Eko both reciting the 23rd Psalm together; both were altar boys if you'll recall
* Eko referring to the first body as "the man that saved my life"; in the flashback we see it more as a double-cross with the guy pushing him out of the plane.
* Kate giving Sawyer a haircut
* Locke teaching Michael to shoot a rifle
* Jin and Sun welcoming Ana-Lucia
* Michael continuing his online chats with Walt (or someone they want us to think is him); the screen blanking out when Jack entered the room
* Claire cutting ties with Charlie; we then see Charlie run off to a big stash of statues at the end

The preview for next week looks good, too, with Michael knocking out Locke and holding a gun on Jack as he prepares to make a break to go find Walt. Then the scene with Jack & Co. going to find Michael and hitting a clearing at night when suddenly all sorts of torches light up around them and you hear a voice saying "this is our island".

Here's the official summary per TVGuide.com:
Episode 2.11: The Hunting Party
Jack, Locke and Sawyer pursue Michael into the jungle as he searches for Walt. Will he find the Others instead? Meanwhile, Sun reacts surprisingly to Jin's desire to join the search party; Hurley and Charlie commiserate about "what women want"; and the backstory involves Jack.

LOST S2-E10 - The 23rd Psalm

I have been looking forward to a new Lost episode since November and tonight's episode did not disappoint. I was also very interested to see Mr. Eko's backstory - the most interesting Tailie so far.

Good things about the episode:
1. The black cloud was great but is this the same thing that is blowing up the ground and making the mechanical noises? A monster that can form itself into a solid and into a vapor is pretty amazing.
2. I noticed the faces in the smoke last night but I had no idea how many there were. Thanks for posting them, Kevin.
3. Mr. Eko's backstory was really good. Sacrificing himself to protect his brother was very brave.
4. Great use of the silver cross connecting Mr. Eko and his brother.
5. Walt talking to Michael again via the computer.

Bad things about the episode:
1. Where was Sayid? I thought sure that he would suprise Michael in the hatch. Must be still mourning.
2. Charlie seemed to whine way too much for me last night.
3. Kate flip-flopping between Jack and Sawyer. Come on, girl, make up your mind.

Questions and thoughts:
1. Why didn't Michael tell Jack (or anyone else) about the messages from Walt? Did Locke tell Michael not to use the computer for anything else? Did the screen go blank or did Michael turn the screen off?
2. All those Virgin Mary statues that Charlie has hidden really concern me. What's gonna happen?
3. When did Charlie tell Claire that he was a drug addict? Was it before she got dragged off by Ethan? Could she be recovering her memory?
4. Great to see Hurley having a possible love interest. Should make for great dialogue.
5. Will we see the flashbacks for Rose, Bernard and the other tailies? Still need to see how Mr. Eko got to Australia and how long ago his brother's plane crashed on the island.
6. When Mr. Eko killed two of the Others when they first got to the island, was that the first time he had killed since he "became" a priest?
7. Didn't notice any cross-over moments (Sayid or Hurley on the TV set, etc.) in this episode. Of course, it would have been kinda difficult.
8. Also didn't notice any Number connections. Combination lock showed 25 and 29; there were 300 statues; Mr. Eko paid 50 (50,000?) for the heroin.
9. What was Charlie singing? Was that one of his DriveShaft songs?
10. I ca't wait until next week. It looks line another good one. And remember the February sweeps are coming up soon, so the episodes will be reeeeaaaallllllyyyy good.

Until next week, stay LOST!!!

nice comments, Jim.

One followup -- on the budding relationship between Hurley and Libby (I think that is what her name is)... think it is a coincidence he was in a mental institution and she is a psychologist?

When quoting the 23rd Psalm, Eko said "though I walk through the shadow of the valley of death" instead of "...walk through the valley of the shadow of death." Interesting wordplay/switch. Not sure what it signifies, if anything. It might fit with theorists who believe the castaways are dead, but I'm hoping against that outcome.

Great Episode! My view of the "Black Smoke" may be different than most, but I believe it is the personification of EVIL. Or, if not evil, it would have to be a connection to each characters past. Those that confront their past will no longer be afraid ... we saw this in both Locke and Eko.

For some reason I am still stuck on the idea of EVIL. The episodes subject matter and title even give light to the battle of GOOD vs EVIL. I love it when TV or Movies work this into their plots ... LOVE IT!
