Episode 2.09: What Kate Did

Wow, what a good episode. They really needed a great cliff-hanger, seeing how it'll be 6 WEEKS until the next episode!!! I do believe they succeeded! Can't wait to read the recaps and such on this one. I tried hitting my favorite message board (lost-forum.com, see link on the right panel), but it is down... which tells me it is flooded with traffic right now!

FYI, the next episode is titled "The 23rd Psalm" with a January 18th airdate. It will be Eko-centric. Per TV Guide, it "will shed more light on why the character took a 40-day vow of silence on the island. And producers promise more info on that stick. 'It has its own flashback,' [Damon] Lindelof quips." Based on the preview, looks like a lot will happen when the show finally returns in mid-January... but we'll save that for another blog.

As for this episode, here are some quick observations for further discussion. I'll try to hit the boards again later, but definitely post you own comments and cut-and-paste anything you guys come across....

Kate blowing up her step-dad's house (and him)... who we later find out was her dad

Kate's mom turning her in

Kate and the black horse -- in the jungle (twice), and in the marshall's car

Sawyer telling Jack he loves Kate

Sawyer seemingly getting possessed by Kate's dead father (Wayne) and attacking her, asking why she killed him

Kate kissing Jack

Michael discovering the blast doors in the ceiling of the hatch

Eko and Locke with the missing piece of the film (and I really liked Eko's explanation of where the film came from); as for the film itself, "do not try to use the computer for communication or it could cause another incident"?

Jack talking to Ana Lucia

Michael talking on the computer to Walt?? (how's that for a cliff-hanger?!)

I'll kick off the comments... finally got onto Lost-Forum, and someone posted that Sayid was on the TV when Kate went to her dad's Army station. They've posted a pic, and sure enough, he was there! I love those before-the-crash connections!
link.

Here are a few questions and comments:
- Kate killed her mean step-father when she found out that he was really her father? Because she hated him for being mean and she didn't want to have evil blood in her? Hello, you KILLED him yourself. You can't get much more evil than that. I just didn't understand that part. Did I miss something? According to her, Wayne never abused her but did abuse her mother. And she only killed him after she found out that he was her father? Wouldn't it be more believable if she killed a step-dad after seeing him abuse her mother relentlessly? I wanted to feel for Kate's plight, but I just couldn't get into it that much.
- Loved the black horse
- Didn't like that Sawyer was "possessed" by Wayne (Why did you kill me?) Was that hallucinations from Kate?
- Liked when Jack and Kate kissed but I thought she had a thing for Sawyer. It might have been a moment of weakness. At least, it gets Jack thinking about it.
- Liked seeing the US Marshall again. Always fun to see an old character pop back up in the flashbacks.
- Extra film didn't offer much except a warning not to use the computer for anything else. Why was the film cut up and why was one part tucked in a Bible on the
other side of the island? Are there more splices (from earlier in the film) that will be discovered later? Will Locke want to go search the other hatch(es)? I loved the interaction between Locke and Eko (and Eko's story will be the next new episode in January - it should be great).
- There were three crosses (graves) that belonged to Shannon, Boone and who? Was it the US Marshall?
- At first, I thought that Ana-Lucia was digging a grave (I thought she was putting a cross in the ground) but I think that she was just putting a stake in the ground for a tent, or something. They never showed the conversation between Ana-Lucia and Jack (remember how last week's episode ended with them looking at each other in the jungle).
- But I really liked the ending - "Dad?" That was really good. I cannot wait until January for the new episodes to start up again.

I just discovered a site where you can download the entire episode and watch it again.

http://watchlost.com/forum/index.php

That way, if you miss the last 5 minutes (as we've done the last 2 weeks in a row) you can go see what you missed.
