Lost - Episode 3.03: Further Instructions
Ok, I'm back in business. Barely. We may still have a zillion boxes to unpack, but at least I've got tivo and internet again!
Ok, so this was a really weird episode. I liked it, but didn't love it. It was one of those back-story, build-up type of episodes, that it much better when you view it from the big picture than by itself. I enjoyed seeing many of the characters we'd missed for the past several episodes, and also liked seeing several new/seldom seen characters among the group.
MSNBC has their recap up , and I'm sure Entertainment Weekly will have theirs shortly.

Boone returns! Polar bear returns! Desmond returns! Hurley returns! Eko returns! Charlie returns!
Very interesting twist that Locke couldn't speak for half the episode. Also cool seeing Eko's stick fall from the sky.
Loved seeing Boone in the sweatlodge. I'll bet that actor is still pissed he was killed off the show.
Also some interesting interactions between Charlie and Locke, especially the drug references. Quite true, considering Locke did hallucinate out on something, plus we see the flashbacks with him living on that commune where they had a huge weed operation. Loved Charlie's remark about "you'll have to punch yourself in the face".
Interesting flashback with Locke in that commune, and we see yet another case where he was conned. His back stories are so interesting in their contrast to his island persona, in that he is the weak, easily swindled person in the real world, yet the tough hunter sage on the island. We still don't know how he was paralyzed.
Desmond's return brings more questions than answers. How did he survive the implosion? Can he now see the future? Loved the deja vu stuff about Locke's speech.
Funny scene where Locke's knife impales Hurley's canteen. Dude!
Creepy scene in that cave with the polar bear. The Locke-Eko "conversation" (or was it?) was interesting. Can't wait for Eko to get better. He's still my favorite character.

I LOVED THIS EPISODE! The illusions that Locke had in the tent with Boone pushing him through the airport was classic LOST!
Locke was in a Weed Farm? Come on ... I would have never guessed he would do something like that. What do you think will happen with him and the law ...
Did anyone else notice how fake the polar bear looked in all the actions scenes? With that kind of budget, you can do better Abrams - you can do better!
Next week looks awesome ... we are finally starting to get back to the "meat" of LOST!

Hiro from the Future! This is starting to compete with LOST for my favorite show on TV.

I was upset that I didn't get to watch Heroes this week -- we'd just moved into the house and didn't have cable yet. I might try to watch it online this weekend...

The only part I really liked of Lost this week was the part with Desmonde at the end. It was a good episode overall I guess. What is up with Locke being at a weed farm?? So weird. This show is crazy!
OK, I had problems with the polar bear story line this week. When Locke enters the cave to save Eko, we see several human bones. One of the dead is still wearing a DHARMA logo shirt. Improbable since to get to the meat the bear would have ripped that thing off. It seems some of the folks from DHARMA met a bad end.
Also, in that same scene, the bear grabs Eko and tries to make off with him while Locke grabs his arms and pulls. Yet once out of the cave, there were no bite marks, scratches, cuts, etc. on Eko's feet. Last time I checked, the only way for a bear to carry something off is to bite it and run. If they were truly fighting over the bear, Eko's legs would have shown some damage.
That leaves a question, who let the bears out? who, who, who, who who let the bears out? who, who, who, who. We have already seen the cages the bears used to be in. Sawyer and Kate are in them now. Did THE OTHERS simply release the bears when they took over? How long ago was that? What is the life expectancy of a polar bear on the tropical island? This is not the first episode where we have seen a bear go after a LOSTaway. We also have seen a bear go after Walt.
Notice the reference to the Geronimo Jackson T-shirt that the undercover cop wore. Geronimo has been seen before on a record album in the hatch. It is also mentioned that the shirt is kind of old. I think Geronimo dates back to the 1970 - 1979 era.
Not my original thoughts but interesting none the less...

Random Thoughts (Flashback events):
1. Takes place in California – noted on Locke’s drivers license. There is also a town called Eureka in California.
2. Story takes place after Locke’s run in with his father (and after Helen?) but before he is paralyzed (which happened four years before the plane crash).
3. I noticed “Geronimo Jackson” on Eddie’s T-shirt before they even said it. Locke said that Eddie’s dad had good taste in music – so, Locke must be a fan. Locke does seem to like music – he bought both of the albums by Drive Shaft. It was Hurley and Charlie looking at the Geronimo Jackson album in the hatch. But with all the time that Locke spent in the hatch looking through books, etc. you would think that he would have come across that album.
4. The whole family / commune story reminded me of the Others and their community. Names of other people in Locke’s commune were Mike, Jan and Adam. There was an Adam in Juliet’s book club who also had grey hair but was clean shaven. The Adam in Locke’s flashback was sitting next to him at the dinner table and had a beard but he also was wearing glasses (just like the book club Adam). Couldn’t tell if it was the same actor or not.
5. The file that Mike and Jan had on Eddie reminded me of the file that Juliet had on Jack. How did they get this information? Eddie’s information said: Sheriff Edward F. Colburn, Humboldt County, Officer #84023.
6. Did Locke shoot Eddie? Did Eddie get away? We saw Locke lower his rifle but we didn’t see if Eddie got away or if Locke shot him or if someone else shot him. Interesting that Locke didn’t load Eddie’s rifle – reminded me of Jack not loading Michael’s gun at the end of Season 2.
7. Cool to hear the conversation between Locke and Eddie about why Locke was chosen. Eddie said he was a good man, but then went on to tell him that he was also easily manipulated. Remind anyone else of Locke’s conversation with Benry?
Random Thoughts (Island events):
1. Great to see Locke back in the jungle again. I thought that whole polar bear story was a little bit of a stretch, but it was interesting to see Locke tracking again.
2. The hatch implodes and Locke shows up in camp a day later – and no one has gone to look at the hatch or to look for any survivors during that time? That seemed a little odd.
3. Charlie was using an orange parachute on his tent. Where did he get that? That balloon was yellow – and I don’t think that Sayid, Ana and Charlie brought that back with them anyway.
4. Since Sawyer wasn’t in this episode, we got some great comic relief from Charlie and Hurley. But I still don’t understand why Locke needed Charlie, or anybody, to stand guard. I mean, his sweat lodge was pretty far away from the beach.
5. Great to see Boone again and the airport dream sequence was really cool. Did you notice that when Hurley was printing out the ticket, the printer made the same sound as when the hatch clock would reset itself back to 180.00? Also, the security guard’s (Benry!) wand made the same beeping noise as the hatch clock does when it gets to four minutes? And when we saw Desmond with the stewardess, why did we saw three images of the stewardess the first time? Is there a cloning clue here?
6. Would there really be hairspray still on the island after 69 days? Sure, maybe nobody needed it but I would have thought that someone like Shannon would have used it up in just a couple of days.
7. The toy truck in the cave was really creepy. And did you see that there was a Dharma logo in the cave, too?
8. Great stuff with Desmond seeing into the future. That will be interesting to see where that goes. Also, will we see an island flashback on what really happened to Demsond, Locke and Eko when the hatch imploded? And if the hatch Imploded, then how did those three get blown away from the hatch?
9. Did Mr. Eko really speak to Locke, or was Locke hallucinating?
10. And how come no one asked about Michael and Walt when Hurley returned to camp? That seemed a little odd. And the two new characters (Nikki and Paulo) just sort of appeared and joined the group. Where the heck is Rose and Bernard?
Previews for next week:
1. Back to the Others with Jack, Kate and Sawyer.
2. Ben is beating on Sawyer
3. Ben demanding to know from Kate if she loves him. At first it looks like Ben is asking Kate about Sawyer, but he may be asking about Jack. You never know.
