Lost, Episode 3.04: Every Man For Himself

I'll be worthless for you guys this morning, since we didn't get to watch Lost last night. We had friends and family in town, so the episode is sitting on our Tivo taunting us until tonight. To make matters worse, I've already had a few co-workers come to my office this morning saying "Wasn't that a great episode last night?" and "that was one of my favorite episodes so far this season".

Sooooo... go ahead and post your comments for one another, but I'll have to avoid reading them until after tonight....

Man, last night's episode was so good. I kept doubting the whole time.

Do you really think they are on a seperate island from the rest of the passengers and where they crashed? I don't.

Juliette is a fertility dr. Interesting. I hope they go back to exploring what happened with Claire and Baby Aaron, where Walt was kept, and the other stuff
involving kids. I feel like those story lines were just left hanging. (along with about a billion others)

So Jack will have to operate on Ben? Interesting. Also, what do you think Ben's speech about lonliness meant? I guess Juliette.

What did Desmond catch on fire? I wonder how his new powers will play out.

It was such a good episode.

Random Thoughts (Flashback events):
1. Couldn’t tell what state they were in, but Sawyer conned Cassidy in Iowa (from “The Long Con”).
2. The bank in Albuquerque to which Sawyer has his reward diverted to is the same bank where Kate staged a robbery in “Whatever the Case May Be”.
3. So, Sawyer crossed paths with Kate’s mom in the diner in Iowa and may have crossed paths again if his money ended up in the same bank with Kate in Alburquerque.
4. Just how did Sawyer get arrested? How soon after he left Cassidy did he get caught? Did he spend all her money – or give it to his boss? Is Cassidy trying to con Sawyer into getting some money – any money – from him? Will we ever see little Clementine Phillips again?
5. The reason for Sawyer's flashback was to show that Sawyer is willing to betray his own short-term friends for long-term goals. Just like he betrayed Munson to get out of prison, he will betray his fellow lostaways in order to be free. Knowing Sawyer's history, the Others may send him back to the camp to carry out a mission in exchange for his freedom (Michael-style redemption).
6. His flashback also shows that he cares more about people then he's willing to admit, and his tough exterior and self sabotaging his personal relationships is him actually trying to con himself. (e.g., risked his life to try and save Walt in Season 1, gave up guns/meds when he knew it was for a legitimate need in season 2, deposited his reward in his daughters bank account in this episode).
7. Anyone notice that the actor who played Munson has been in many shows before:? Felicity (Javier, the coffee house guy), The Drew Carey Show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, etc. Also, the actor who played the Warden was in “Predator” with Arnold.
8. This flashback was one of the shortest flashbacks that I can remember, but it was still interesting. I thought that Sawyer would be conning Munson, but I didn’t guess that he would do it to get himself released – although that’s a very good reason, considering that he still had six years left on his sentence.

Random Thoughts (Island events):
1. I love Desmond’s new ability. I was wondering what he was building and I’m glad that this mystery got answered in this show (instead of waiting a half a season or more). ;-)
2. The cartoon Jack was watching was from Corny Concertos, this cartoon featured a young Daffy Duck saving the young geese from the Vulture, while Blue Danube was being played.
3. Jack's interactions with Juliet at the beginning of the episode show him beginning to play Juliet and Ben against each other, just as Ben played Jack and Locke against each other when he was their captive.
4. So, the Others have a submarine? How cool is that. That explains how the Others were able to board the boat with dry clothes when they attacked Sun.
5. With Colleen dying, that adds another person to the list of the people who have killed someone. Some by murder and some by other means. Sun joins Sawyer, Sayid, Jack, Locke, Charlie, Kate, Eko, Michael, Walt and maybe even Hurley in an indirect way.
6. The Others are unaware of what caused the violet sky/loud noise preceding the Swan hatch implosion. Tom (Mr. Friendly) mentioned it disrupted communications but he didn't seem to be that sure of the cause.
7. Ben beats Sawyer with a wand. Ben was seen waving a security wand over Jack during Locke’s dream sequence.
8. I thought that maybe the Others were conning Sawyer. Shouldn’t it have taken a couple of hours to insert a pacemaker into his chest? Oh well, it still worked. Or did Sawyer just WANT them to think that it worked? Oh, my head.
9. Great scene with Sawyer watching Kate getting dressed and the watch going off. Also loved it when he poured the bucket of water over his head.
10. So, did they kidnap Jack because of the tumor in Ben’s back? The X-rays on the wall were left there on purpose so that Jack would have seen them. Also, he didn’t try very hard to revive Colleen. Remember when Charlie was hung by Ethan in Season 1 and Jack pounded really hard on Charlie’s chest 23 times before he came to. That’s right – 23 times. I also read somewhere that Charlie was written to really die but his character was so beloved, that they decided to keep him around. But back to Colleen. Maybe he didn’t really pound on her chest because of the gunshot wound (even though Juliet said that she had removed the bullet). Who knows?
11. Rain started when Kate climbed out of her cage and also when Hurley fixed his fruit salad (right before the lightning strike).
12. “Of Mice and Men” is a novella written by John Steinbeck that Sawyer reads while in prison in “Every Man for Himself”. Both Sawyer and Ben quote the book to each other on the way to the Hydra Island Lookout. The story is the tale of a dimwitted, childish but physically powerful man named Lenny who befriends a feeble bodied man with quick wit named George. The ideal situation for both men, who are struggling to find work, is to save up enough money to get a farm. Lenny dreams of owning a farm with a few rabbits, and loves soft things. However, the dream falls apart as Lenny accidentally breaks the neck of their bosses' wife, while she was trying to seduce him. To spare Lenny what will be a long and painful death, George shoots Lenny, and distracts him by talking about the bunny farm he dreamed about.
13. The complete quote that Ben said to Sawyer from the book goes like this: “Loneliness? A guy needs somebody--to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody. Don’t make no difference who the guy is, long as he’s with you. I tell ya. I tell ya. A guy gets too lonely an’ he gets sick.”
14. It seemed a little odd to me that Ben would carry that bunny all the way up that hill. Did he really need to show it to Sawyer to have him believe that the pacemaker story was a lie? Also, when Sawyer hit Ben, the other Others just held Sawyer back. I would have thought that they would have hit him with their rifles or something.

Previews for next week:
1. Looks like it will involve all of the Losties. Of course, it may have been scenes for the next two weeks of shows.
2. The Losties have been on the Island 71 days.
3. Ben has the tumor.
4. The man in the video screen of the Pearl Station, as the camera panned, could be the man who was in the Arrow station, who lost his eye. You can see the eyepatch. Remember there was a glass eye that Mr. Eko (?) found.

Tonight's episode by the numbers:
2 – Prison Island is twice the size of Alcatraz (Alcatraz is 18.86 acres)
4 – the tumor is located on L4 of the spine
5 – golf club that Desmond uses for his lightning rod
6 – number of years left on Sawyer’s prison sentence
9 – number of months that Sawyer had been in prison
23 – unit 23c of the storage unit (or parking lot) is where the money is
32 – age Sawyer first says he is
35 – age Sawyer finally admits to being
40 – age of the man whose X-rays show a tumor in his spine
70 – heart beats per minute (Sawyer’s resting rate)
140 – heart beats per minute (Sawyer’s active rate)
125 – heart beats per minute (when the watch will start beeping)
94, 125, 126, 135 – heart rate we see on Sawyer’s watch in the show
180 – Weight Sawyer says he is
248 – Uniform number for Munson
441 – Highway near where the storage unit (or parking lot) where the money is
840 – Uniform number for Sawyer (guess they’re not issued in sequential order)
10 million – amount of money that Munson stole from the Government

WHAT?! Are the Others on another Island? From the comments above, I believe that may be the case - who knows. They have a Submarine? Were did this come from ... Did someone mention it or is it a best guess?

My head is spinning, but the episode was great. I loved the how Jack is starting to play Jewels. I can't wait to see what will happen when Jack performs Surgery on Ben ... GOOD STUFF!

I am ready for more ...

Thoughts on baby Clementine....
Name of Kate Winslet character who had her memory erased in the underrated "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
AND of course, there's the obvious folksong tie-in:
"...you are LOST and gone forever, oh my darling, Clementine."
Also, the root word of the name is "clement," which means "merciful," not exactly a trait Sawyer wants anyone to see in himself, but it one that he clearly possesses.

Is there any significance that Rose and Locke were healed of their ailments on their island but someone on the Others island has a tumor?

I think we've all overlooked something important with regard to Kate: we don't know what went on during her little meeting with Ben on the beach. She may very well have received orders from Ben that she could not refuse (ie, a death threat) and that's why she chose not to leave when she had the opportunity to in last night's episode. My guess is that she is the key to something very important that we don't know yet.

Also, I noticed that Desmond is unsure of his future predicting abilities. He obviously had some skills before (like when he met Jack in the past) but something happened in turning that key. He said that the golf thing was an EXPERIMENT -- meaning to me that he wasn't 100%sure that lightning would strike Claire's cover.

Lastly SPOILER ALERT according to TV Guide, "next week, a major character (as in a series regular) whose name is not Sawyer, will join Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia and Libby in the big island in the sky.
