Lost episode 02: Adrift

**UPDATED Thursday night, 8:30pm**

I have to admit I was a bit let down by this episode, mainly because the plot didn't move forward. Yes, it was great to go back and see what happened to the guys on the raft and what happened after Kate went in the hatch and Locke followed, but it is a bad thing when the brief promo for NEXT week gets you more excited than the prior hour of the current episode.

That said, there was still some great stuff this week. Here's some tidbits... I'll keep adding to this post...

For those wanting more screen capture, there is a great collection here.

There's also a good summary written on Entertainment Weekly's site here.
and another one here.

This is the first episode to not start with an eye-opening sequence. It starts with Sawyer getting on pieces of the broken raft. As the raft breaks up, we here Jin screaming something. We don't see him again until the very end of the episode. Sawyer saves Michael from drowning. Michael starts yelling for Walt and when Sawyer tries to calm him down, Michael blames Sawyer for forcing him to shoot the flare and thus causing Walt's abduction.

It is Locke who takes off the shoes we saw in the premier. Not sure if this is for him to walk quieter, of some wonder if he thinks he is walking on sacred ground. He stops to observe a logo on the walls. It's the same one we saw last week on Desmond's shirts, the medicine cabinet, etc. We see a wall with a TON of scratched marks, indicating someone keeping track of time. We see him open miniblinds and see that it is artificial light.

That logo was EVERYWHERE inside the hatch. Here's a closeup...

Locke finds Kate on the floor of Desmond's room. Desmond then confronts Locke and asks "Are you the him?" Locke says yes, but Desmond then asks Locke "What did one snowman say the the other snowman". A code phrase? Something dealing with polar bears? A kid's riddle -- chill? freeze? do you smell carrots, etc.? When Locke can't answer, Desmond becomes hostile again.

Desmond asks Kate to tie up Locke, but Locke says it is Kate that is the dangerous fugitive. Kate is obviously pissed. He ties her up, but slips a knife into her pants. Desmond then throws her in a dark room.

Sawyer digs out the bullet in his arm with his fingers *OUCH!*, then asks Michael "You got a Band Aid?"

Their wreckage is bumped by an apparent shark. If you looked carefully, the shark's tail had the logo on it!!

Other favorite quotes of the Sawyer-Michael exchanges: “Well I’ll just stop bleedin’ then!” and “What are you gonna do, splash me?” Sawyer checks his bullets and just then the shark bumps again, causing Sawyer to lose many of the bullets. Sawyer later swims toward the bigger chunk of raft and Michael shoots the shark (we see blood in water).

Back in the dark room, Kate manages to get out the knife and untie herself. She feels around and finds a lightswitch and we see it is a huge supply closet, filled with canned/jarred foods, all with the same logo as above. It is now obvious this truly is a long-term shelter (bomb/virus/etc)?

She grabs several chocolate Apollo candy bars. Interesting to note that Apollo was the god of the sun, which is prevent in many aspects of the show (the mural on the hatch wall, Sun's name, etc.) Question: Kate eats a chocolate bar -- will it affect her in any way?

Locke talks with Desmond and gets his name (confirms what we as viewers knew). Keeps trying to tell Desmond he's not a threat. Tells him he works as a collections agent for a box company (which we know was owned by Hurley, which at some point burnt down). Interesting that Locke is more open with Desmond than he has been with anyone else. Desmond asks about how many are out there, whether any are sick (dead). “The world is still out there?” Locke asks him if he never leaves there (no response).

The beeping alarm goes off again and Desmond forces Locke to enter "the numbers" into the computer, one that Locke says "I haven't seen one of those in 20 years". Locke hesitates before hitting "Execute" asking “What’s gonna happen?” After doing it, it increments a counter back to 108.00 or 10800. This tells us the beeping at the begging of the premier wasn't an alarm clock that woke Desmond, it was a "put in your numbers into the computer or something will/won't happen". Obviously this is on a constant cycle.

Someone on one of the fan boards noted that The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun. The mural has 108 in the sun and 108 outside the sun. Interesting.

As Jack is heading to the hatch, we see Claire and Charlie talking. She sees the figurine in his bag and pulls it out. Charlie gets visibly nervous and tells her to be careful, and tries to distract attention by saying it's a Virgin Mary statue he found and "It might just come in handy."

They then hear Jack coming in. Locke identifies that it is Jack, he's surprised he's there, and he's their doctor. Desmond adjusts his mirrors and sees Jack's gun.

Kate moves some crates around and goes up into the ventilation shaft. She ends up over that control room just as Jack is coming in, and sees the whole scene with the Jack vs. Locke/Desmond showdown. Wild to see that warning shot (or was it) that Desmond fired almost took out Kate.

Desmond still shows no recognition of Jack (or perhaps he fully expected Jack to be there), but Jack obviously remembers Desmond. How he remembers someone he briefly met years ago is interesting.

I still have a problem believing this is the same guy (or the same timeframe) we saw showering at the beginning on the premier. Desmond is very dirty and this episode we saw nothing to indicate how he'd get that dirty between the shower and now. Look at his hands when he is holding the gun to Locke's head -- the fingernails are really dirty. He's unshaven and his face has smudges. Perhaps it is an oversight on the producer's part, but I doubt nothing at this point!

We see lots of flashbacks of Michael, mostly dealing with him getting a lawyer to try and stop his ex-wife from taking Walt to Rome. She wants him to revoke his parental rights so she and her new husband can adopt. It's a "David vs. Goliath" situation for Michael. In the proceedings we find out he hadn't seen Walt in 14 months, as she's had him in Amsterdam. We confirm he'd been in an accident, and his ex had paid the hospital bills. He's on disability and can't work to support Walt. She tells him he's a gifted artist.

In the final flashback, we see Michael meeting his ex and a very young (and shy) Walt. Michael gives him a stuffed POLAR BEAR. The bag it is in has sun logos all over.

The episode ends with Sawyer and Michael washing ashore. A very terrified Jin runs up, hands tied behind him yelling about "others". We then see a bunch of people in the distance advancing while carrying primitive weapons.

The preview for next week looks exciting. We see Sawyer, Michael and Jin all getting the crap beat out of them. We see them getting dragged off and thrown into a pit, which already contains Ana (the woman Jack met in the airport bar). We see them talking about a plane crash and she says "flight 815?"

People have noted that if you look at the scene where the "others" are walking up, she is standing in the back of that pack of thugs, so perhaps her being in the pit is staged to gather info. Maybe these "others" are survivors from the back of the plane, and they've had a rougher time with the OTHER others and thus are just a tad more defensive?

We also see Locke saying something about "this isn't what was supposed to happen" and a shot of him alone in the control room yelling "what am I supposed to do?" The computer box appears destroyed and the monitor appears to be dangling from the desk! Not a good sign!

We also see Desmond running through the forest, we see Kate with a rifle, we see Hurley in that hatch (how the heck did he get down there?) You know, maybe HURLEY is "him". After all, his numbers are on the hatch. hmmm....

Looks like a LOT will happen next week...

Subject: FW: 2005 Hurricane Rita Storm Damage in Houston

With all the news lately about Hurricane Katrina, we shouldn't forget that Houston has had it's share of devastating weather also.

The attached photo illustrates the damage caused to a home when Hurricane Rita passed through the Houston area a couple of days ago. Thank goodness for the evacuations, no matter how bad the traffic! It really makes you cherish what you have, and reminds us not to take life for granted!!!

Warning: The attached picture is quite graphic and may not be suitable for younger viewers.

(ok, for those who are a bit slow **COUGH COUGH KRISTEN**, the boards are INSIDE the building, thus leaving the windows exposed to flying debris)

the first Lost theory I really like...

Ok, over lunch I browsed the boards some more and came across one of the most plausible theories I have seen as to "what is the island?" Read on...

-----
NOTE: this part is real stuff. Google it if you need proof.

In 1929, Dr. John DESMOND Bernal (1901-1971), an Irish scientist, conceived of the Bernal sphere, a rotating space colony with a diameter of approximately 15 kilometers (9.3 miles), filled with air and colonized around the equator, where the rotation of the colony would create centrifugal force to simulate Earth's gravity. The target population was 20,000 to 30,000 people.

In the 60s and 70s, speculation and research into the possibility of space colonies experienced a renaissance, brought on by the Space Race. One of the most prominent thinkers participating in the design and advocacy of space colonies was Princeton physicist Gerard O'Neill, who in 1969 asked the provocative question, "Is the surface of a planet really the right place for an expanding technological civilization?"

Throughout the 70s, O'Neill led workshops that investigated several proposed space colony designs in great detail. In a series of studies held at Stanford University in 1975 and 1976 with the purpose of speculating on designs for future space colonies, Dr. Gerard Kitchen O'Neill proposed a modified Bernal sphere with a diameter of only 500 m rotating at 1.9 RPM to produce a full Earth gravity at the sphere's equator. The result would be an interior landscape that would resemble a large valley running all the way around the equator of the sphere. Sunlight was to be provided to the interior of the sphere using external mirrors to direct it in through large windows near the poles. The form of a sphere was chosen for its optimum ability to contain air pressure and its optimum mass-efficiency at providing radiation shielding.

A NASA Summer Study in 1975 investigated three primary designs, dubbed "Island One" (sized for a population of 10,000), Island Two would house 140,000, and Island Three (O'Neill cylinder) would support a population of 10,000,000. All three are based on the premise of a self-sustaining, artificial ecology within the station, called an arcology.

Wow. Interesting, and it does seem to tie in. It still leaves plenty of other questions, but it does tie nicely with many of the issues. The tie-in all starts with the name 'Desmond' (as in Dr. John DESMOND Bernal?), he's Irish (as the character Desmond appears), plays on the whole Desmond saying to Jack in the stadium he was sorta a Dr., and goes along with what one of the writers said about "IF it's an island."

The Bernal Sphere theory mentions domes and tunnels, sunlight being directed via mirrors. Sound familiar? Generating the centrifugal force would require a large energy source. Hmmm.. can you say HUGE magnet?

Consider the episode Locke finds the hatch: He looks at Boone and states it will start to rain in one minute (and it does). If this is an artificial environment with weather control, then Lock has found the pattern to the weather, ie... it is scheduled.

Remember that Rosseau's maps showed 3 Islands. The NASA designs have 3 Islands. The powerline running into the sea fits this theory. One of Walt's comics features a space station.

As for numbers, Bernal's proposed sphere was 15km in diameter, and he died on the 15th (Sept 15, 1971).

This is very interesting coincidence if nothing else. Regardless if it's correct or not, the theory fits with amazing harmony. Now, how that ties in to the Desmond character remains to be seen. The "real" Dr. Bernal died in 1971, so no way that is him (unless it is cloning, the injections, etc.) Or perhaps his son? Who knows. Even if this theory holds up, it still leaves plenty of other questions to answer -- Walt, the Others, Locke's paralysis, the Black Rock, how'd the plane get there, the tie-in between all the characters, the black smoke, the numbers, and so on.

Can't wait to see what next week brings!

More concise recap

My previous blog from last night was information overload. Good stuff there, and lots of theories.. however, I figured I should post a followup that better consolidates the key points. Here's they are..

- The song they played at the top of the episode was "Make Your Own Kind of Music" written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Performed by Mama Cass Elliot in 1969.

- When Desmond jumps out of bed, it looks like he is either sleeping in a bunk (possibly two people? ETHAN??) or it's a loft with another living area below it. Possible sunlight coming in both by the sleeping area and the dining booth

- Desmond types the NUMBERS into the keyboard near his bed... and the > : | face stops beeping.... This is a different computer than the one Jack was at

- The last two numbers on Desmond's combination lock on his locker: 23, 42

- Desmond is going 16mph on the exercise bike

- The vial on the drug the Desmond was injecting at the beginning was labeled: CR 4-8 15 16-23 42

- The items in the bunker are from several decades. Ex. WWII-era plumbing/electric/concrete in the tunnel (ex. Westinghouse line switch), Technics turntable from the 70s, lava lamp, modern-day front-loading Whirlpool Calypso and Tide & Downy bottles. He is obviously getting supplied somehow.

- Confirmed Hurley was IN a psych ward. Won $114 (11+4=15?) in the lottery 5 mo (5) after he got out.

- When Walt appears, he is dripping wet, no life preserver, wearing different clothes. It is clear that Vincent led Shannon to Walt. Now the best part.. he is speaking in reversed audio! (some people have too much time to figure this out). Here is a link where someone captured the audio and reversed it...

To me it sounds like walt is saying "don't press the button, the button is bad." Sounds reminescent of his warning to them about the hatch. I believe he said, "Don't open the hatch. The hatch is bad!" Could it be the 'Execute' button Jack almost pushed? no computer i know of has an execute button, but maybe it's a special old school government thing.

- Yes, the QUARANTINE was inside the hatch and definitely more pronounced than in the previews. I agree it warning about the OUTSIDE. Besides, why would a quarantined person (if it were the person inside not outside being quarantined) have a cache of weapons in his bunker?

- Locke and Kate discuss and confirm what pulled him into the hole was "a cloud of black smoke."

- Jack's future fiance/wife killed a man in that crash named Adam Rutherford... as in Shannon Rutherford! (also coincidental his name was Adam like Adam & Eve in the cave?) Now whether it is Shannon's father or husband we don't know (we know she was married based on an episode last season). He died at 8:15 (8, 15). He was 57 (15+42?). Sara wakes up from surgery at 2:30 (23?). She has an 8-mo recovery (8).

- That scene is < 12 yrs ago, since Shannon was 8 when she and Boone became steps, and she's said she's 20 now. Sara said in the wedding clip last season that "A little over two years ago, I blew a tire out. Flipped over the center divider into oncoming traffic and was hit head-on by a SUV."

- Interesting that Jack's dad Christian gives Jack the idea of Hope

- Desmond is huge, since Jack met him in that stadium, and it appears to be that same guy living in the hatch. The name and accent is Irish.

- Desmond tells Jack he's in a race around the world. Somehow that is significant

- Des goes on to coerce Jack into "fixing" Sara. "What if you could fix her?"....."You don't believe in miracles?" says Des to Jack....this is HUGE!!!

- Did anyone catch what Desmond last said to Jack at the end of their conversation in the stadium - "See you in another life"? Reminds me of Nadia's writing on Sayid's photo "ill see you in the next life"

- note the sneakers as Jack begins to explore the Hatch.

- Magnet pulling Jack's guncase key. THAT MAGNET IS PROBABLY THE THING THAT THROWS THE COMPASSES OFF ON THE ISLAND!!!!!!!!

- When Jack is in the tunnel by the magnet, it looks like that was a corridor that may have led somewhere that Desmond (or somebody else) was in the process of blocking off permanently (it was boarded up, and it had been about 1/8 cemented off, starting from the top with a few buckets of concrete sitting on the floor. More exploration later?

- a MASSIVE control room with lots of REALLY OLD computers.

- a freeze frame advance on the sequence where Jack's looking at the mural. There are three shots: The initial discovery, a shot of Jack's face, and then another shot of the mural as Jack looks down to the paints. In the third shot, if you freeze and follow Jack's light, you'll see a picture of an eye, then the letter m, and then the word sick just below the m. Put it together: Eye M Sick... I am sick!

- the rest of the mural basically shows the island with a sun in the middle. pictures of houses, a face, an arrow pointing up(possibly to the above ground?) There are a bunch of stick figures an eye, fish symbols. there are a bunch of 4 lines that have a slash through them to like keep track of a score. There is a mad person. The only numbers on the mural were 16, 42 and 108 (which happens to be the sum of all the numbers). Also the letters JD (Desmond?)

- DESMOND holds Locke at gunpoint, as Jack realizes who it is. And what about Locke? He seemed to think it was OK that some Scottish guy was holding a gun to his head. And what happened to Kate? Yah, Locke said that it was OK - but should we trust him on this? He never told the truth about Boone.

Season 2 of Lost has begun! And WOW...

Ok, my wife and I are such addicted dorks. She has been on the phone talking to friends recapping the show... and I've been browsing Lost fan sites reading the message boards for what people noticed. Why are we up at 11:30pm? Don't we know my alarm goes off at 5:15am? Here's some of the details people have gathered from the premier.

First off, excellent start to the season 2. We were all a bit let down by the finale last season (too much unanswered), but they opened this season with a bang. Unfortunately, it means MORE questions, but wow...

On to the interesting tidbits I've cut-and-pasted from the boards. I started to organize them, but there's just too much!

----------

- when we opened, I thought I was looking at a young Jack, but boy was I wrong!! It's INSIDE THE HATCH!!! Damon (show's cocreator) wasn't kidding when he said we'd see it in the first 5 min.

- The song they played at the top of the episode was "Make Your Own Kind of Music" written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Performed by Mama Cass Elliot in 1969.

- Desmond types the NUMBERS into the keyboard... and the > : | face stops beeping....

- Desmond injected a drug from a vial labelled
CR 4-8 15 16-23 42 (the cursed numbers)
"30 ml Multiple Dose Vial"
FOR INJECTION..
RX1 and some small print I can't make out, all the bottles are the same.

There's an octagon shaped symbol on Desmond's drug locker that has a circle in the middle of it and a series of 3 lines inside each edge of the octagon, the outer of each lines is broke in two. I'm sure we'll get a screen cap tomorrow, but the same logo appears on the computer Jack walks up to above the keys on the keyboard. So whoever put in the cabinet for the injections also supplied the computers.

Looks very similar to this:
which is I Ching's "Pa Kua", which basically represents the ever-fluctuating elemental forces of the universe, according to About.com

- Hatch LIGHT = reflecting mirrors and powerspots

The hatch may not / is probably not the only way into the underground bunker. There are to many supplies he has that are more recent than to have been brought in before the hatch was buried. looked like a "cold war" lab testing facility to me

The items in the bunker are from several decades.

- in the beginning it definately seems like there are a number of drawn shades in the bunker, like some form of light is getting in there somehow...

- There was a game board, looked like Go, on Desmond's kitchen table (the booth). Watch when he picks up the dishes and you'll see it. The pieces were round and appeared to be black and white, similar to those found on Adam and Eve.

This was definitely NOT a submarine.

- Larger computers from the 60s; "newer" ones from late 70s/early 80s. The comps look like IBM 360 models or Apple IIs. Programming language could also be Fortran.

- that seems to be a different computer than the one Desmond uses in the first scene... in the first scene he hops out of bed and goes right to the computer, but that doesnt seem to be the case with the one Jack found...

- Technics Turntable (record player for you younguns) from the 70s (notice the LED light and the dots on the side of the platter....telltale 70s Technics)

- Lava Lamp from sometime in the 90s....During the 90s, the Lava Lamp went though a bit of a redesign as other companies began making them. Old lamps from the 60s have blunt tops. This one is more missile shaped and I don't think is that old.

- Front loading Whirlpool Calypso Washer and Dryer from the 2000s

- Modern Tide and Downy bottles on top of the Washer/Dryer

Just because Desmond is in the underground bunker doesn't mean he has been there for the amount of time the items in the bunker have been. Where is desmond getting his supplies from? He is well supplied --- with eggs (perhas peaches), cherries, dish detergent, laundry detergent, drugs, etc. This stuff hasn’t been sitting around for 16 years. So he is getting supplied from somewhere. And I thought the washer and dryer looked new even if everything else seemed 70s. The fact that there are elements shown from many different eras is VERY important....somehow.

Maybe there's an entire underground "city" or something. Desmond might just be the gatekeeper to protect against intruders

- First, very interesting that the entirety of the "living quarters" looks like it was furnished directly out of an Ikea catalog, the electronics are almost all from the mid 60's to late 70's, the kitchen is a hodgepodge, mostly newer. All the construction is concrete with drywall in a few rooms (excercise room for one). Modern switchplates on some walls. Brand spanking new washer/dryer. Newer style showerhead. Despite seeing a few references to it here, there were NO eggs in the blender, just some powder, two cherries and some kind of citrus fruit.

The plumbing, electric and concrete construction of the "tunnel" are all WWII era artifacts, right down to the Westinghouse line switch. On the mural, in addition to all the observations that I've seen here, on the upper left hand corner, there are many stick figures, with a red line pointing to the 108 in the sun. At the magnetic pull place, it looks like that was a corridor that may have led somewhere that Desmond (or somebody else) was in the process of blocking off permanently (it was boarded up, and it had been about 1/8 cemented off, starting from the top with a few buckets of concrete sitting on the floor.

Oh, back to the living quarters: I can't quite tell, but it looks like Desmond is either sleeping in a bunk bed (possibly two people? Maybe ETHAN???), or it's a loft with another living area underneath it. Possible sunlight coming in both by the sleeping area and the dining booth.

- The quarantine warning is on the inside of the hatch. Why would you put he warning inside the room (hatch) that those who are quarantined are already in. You would put the warning on the door that enters into the quarantined area.

In this case, the word quarantine is on the inside of the hatch, leading to the island. Is the island quarantined and not the hatch?

- Besides, why would a quarantined person have a cache of weapons in his bunker?

- Locke described what pulled him into the hole as "a cloud of black smoke." Kate confirms this.

- confirmed that Hurley was a patient at psych ward with Lenny (another ANSWER, but Why?....), $114 million jackpot won by Hurley in lotto. He specifically says, "When i got out, actually about 5 months after i got out..." when telling Jack about the numbers...

- We saw Walt. He's dripping wet. He also looked much older and taller. And he was wearing different clothes. Wonder if it was just a vision. He sure disapeared fast. He seemed to need to contact Shannon but couldn't talk right. It was like the audio was backwards. Why was he so wet and without his life jacket? He was in a boat. If the Others were there whispering to Shannon it explains why Walt was there but why would the Others bother whispering to Shannon?

- it was kind of clear that it was Vincent who led Shannon to Walt

- it seemed like you could see through Walt when they first showed him? Like he was superimposed over the tree behind him, and when they showed the close-up he seemed solid. I'm thinking he bilocated

- WHAT DID WALT SAY TO SHANNON? She hears the whispers (also, any help on these?) I swear I hear "Shannon:, she looks up and sees "ghostWalt". Well, it gets better. Walt looked like he was suffering a stroke or something... but perhaps that is because the clip is in REVERSE. Here's a reversed audio capture and another version.

To me it sounds like walt is saying "don't press the button, the button is bad." Sounds reminescent of his warning to them about the hatch. I believe he said, "Don't open the hatch. The hatch is bad!"

Could it be the 'Execute' button Jack almost pushed? no computer i know of has an execute button, but maybe it's a special old school government thing. and didn't he press "execute" in the beginning after he put the code thing in? Or could TPTB be implying a double meaning, something more sinister, like to execute/kill someone? I think the "execute" button has something to do with the security device. That Des is in charge of it.

- noises while Kate was "taken"? any help? happened really fast, couldn't think, was waiting for sword slicing sounds and the whispers like the "teaser", but it was TOTALLY different!

- Light when Kate was taken

- So Jack's future wife/fiance Sarah killed someone in that accident. When the paramedics bring the SUV driver in, they say "Adam Rutherford, 57, no chest sounds". Then Jack tells another doctor to "take care of Mr. Rutherford". That doctor responds that he can't intibate. He died at 8:15 (the numbers again)

Now, here's the BIG connection. Shannon's last name is Rutherford. We already knew that Shannon Rutherford's father married Boone's mother, and that at some point, Shannon's father died. Now we know, most likely, that Adam Rutherford is Shannon's father, and that he was in an accident with Jack's future fiancee, Sarah in which he sustained fatal injuries.

The scene is no more than 12 years ago:
Shannon says she's 20.
Shannon and Boone were 8 & 10 when they became steps.
Shannon's dad married Boone's mom, then died in this fb

- Another theory is that the Rutherford guy is Shannon's husband, not father. Remember, Boone said she was married in "Hearts and Minds": "She was married. She's not married anymore, and that has nothing to do with this. Rutherford is her father's name. Our parents got married when I was 10, she was 8." But that's only speculation that she went back to her maiden name. Who is to say she changed her name back to her maiden name? She could have very well kept the name she had then-her married name.

In "Do No Harm" Sara says while making the toast:
"A little over two years ago, I blew a tire out. Flipped over the center divider into oncoming traffic and was hit head-on by a SUV."

So I doubt the wedding flashback is that far back in his life. It was probably very close to his father's death. Which would make it seem like Rutherford was her husband, not her father

- Adam Rutherford... Adam & Eve? (the corpes in the cave)

- Anyone catch the shot of Jack's watch (happens really fast, but they do stop long enough, if you can frameframe it) during the surgery. What does his watch read?

- Anyway, I was just going through my DVD trying to edit out all the commercials and got to the flashback where they briefly focus on Jack's ID badge and decided to pause and get closer to the TV. It's tough to see as it's only momentarily in focus (and perhaps someone with high def or some other really clear picture can jump in here) but the first line has his name, and the second has a word (which I can't make out - this is where I'm hoping someone will jump in) and the number 41.

- Christian (Jack's dad) gives the idea of HOPE to Jack, this is something Jack lacks, Kate knew he didn't think they'd be alright. But he's getting better.

- the flashback looks like it is late 70s/early 80s, based on Jack's hair

- she wakes up at 2:30.. " Am I alive ?"

- 8 month recovery for Sara (clock is 2:30), who apparently Jack is gonna steal from this guy Kevin (whose name is revealed later and who apparently abandons Sara when Jack tells him she is paralyzed), and I think we may see him interfere in Jack's marriage. Either before, during, and/or after the wedding - they did cut sharply away from Jack' wedding flashback in S1, maybe there's more to this scene....

- We find out Desmond's name. FYI, Desmond is an Irish name. It simply means from south Munster. Now we've got a Brit, a Frenchie, an Aussie, a couple of Koreans, an Irishman, a Canadian and a bunch of Yanks.

- Did anybody notice whether Jack had his tatoos in the flashback? I think there were shots of his bare shoulders while he was running.

- Desmond tells Jack he's in a race around the world. Somehow that is significant

- anyone catch what aisle # Jack trips and falls while racing Desmond up the stadium stairs. Then Des goes on to coerce Jack into "fixing" Sara.

- We enter a MASSIVE control room with lots of REALLY OLD computers.

- Numbers 16 and 42 were on that painting/mural in the hatch. Also 108 (which is the sum of all the numbers together). Also says: my sick.., JD (Desmond).

I am sick!

I also saw pictures of houses, a face, an arrow pointing up(possibly to the above ground?) stick figures, and fish symbols. The only numbers on the mural were 42 and 108.

- basically it shows the island with a sun in the middle. There are a bunch of stick figures and an eye. there are a bunch of 4 lines that have a slash through them to like keep track of a score. There is a mad person. There is the word sick...

- DESMOND holds Locke at gunpoint, as Jack realizes who it is. And what about Locke? He seemed to think it was OK that some Scottish guy was holding a gun to his head. And what happened to Kate? Yeh, Locke said that it was OK - but should we trust him on this? He never told the truth about Boone.

Humor amongst tragedy...

At least some people are keeping their sense of humor in the wake of Hurricane Katrina...
