Lost, episode 2x20: Two for the Road

Holy... crap....

Wow, that was a great episode. I don't even know where to begin. It definitely made our heads spin with a ton of jaw-dropping "Wow" moments. Love it! The producers surely didn't lie... they said the final episodes would be a fast-paced race to the season finale! The last 5 minutes of the show definitely fell into the "Nuh-uh! No way!!" category.

I'm going ahead and posting this just as a placeholder so we can get the comments going. If you are one of the many lurkers to this site (I know you are there -- many of you told me!), please post comments, as this episode definitely is discussion-worthy! I'll be updating this thread as I gather up my thoughts and read up more and see what all I missed. In the mean time, here are my random thoughts and observations:

edit 5/4 5:20am: the MSNBC recap is out there.
edit 5/4 7:30am: the Entertainment Weekly recap is now online.

Ana-Lucia and Libby -- didn't see that coming, though it has been speculated the actresses' little DUI adventure in Hawaii had them on the outs. And the actress who plays Libby was already signed for another series next season. That scene definitely caught me by surprise, though... especially Libby. I liked her. Poor Hurley. Then again, I'm not convinced Libby is dead. After all, she had that blanket (and who knows what else -- wine, etc.?) held in front of her. Who knows.

Ana-Lucia and Sawyer -- that's one way to get a gun from Sawyer. Too bad we won't get to see that relationship develop further -- it was kinda neat to see the two outcasts of the island get together.

Ana-Lucia and Jack's dad -- now we know how and why she was in Australia. Nice run-in with Sawyer as he was getting out of the car.

Jack's dad and the woman at the house -- wild speculation here. Was she Jack's ex? Was she Claire's mom? Regardless, we know Jack has a half-sister.

Sayid -- nice hole he was digging. What was it? Sad when he told Hurley about the private beach.

Hurley -- hilarious in his ineptness. Love Jin giving him the thumbs-up.

Ana-Lucia and Henry -- lots there. Him catching her off-guard and almost choking her to death. Later saying Goodwin though she was misunderstood and could change her. Her planned to kill him but couldn't do it.

Henry and Locke -- Henry telling Locke his failed mission was to come get Locke because he's one of the good ones.

Michael -- holy cow. I knew he was up to something, but I just figured he'd steal away Henry and lock Ana Lucia up. Not shoot her. And Libby. And himself. So is he brainwashed? Or being forced to release Henry and lead our Losties into a trap as a bargain to get back Walt?

Next week's preview... good grief, please don't kill off Eko.

Random Thoughts (Flashback events):
1. I think that Jack’s dad and Locke’s dad has criss-crossed almost everyone on the island. Just kidding, but they sure do get around. They have had flashbacks with Jack, Locke, Kate, Ana-Lucia, and Sawyer at least. And now maybe Claire. Much speculation on who was the blonde woman that “Tom” was talking to. Rumors abound it that it was Claire’s mom which would make Jack and Claire brother and sister. Does this remind anyone else of the Star Wars movie with Luke and Leia?
2. Ana-Lucia and Christian other names. A-L gave Christian "Tom", which was the name of Kate's doctor boyfriend/ex who she got killed. And Christian picked "Sarah" for Ana, which is Jack's ex's name - and possibly with whom Christian was fooling around with because we never did find out who Sarah was seeing when she left Jack!
3. Was the dangerous work that Christian was referring to going to see his daughter’s mom? Got to be more than that to this story.
4. Who else thought “Uh-oh. Rain.” when it started raining in the flashback?
5. How many times does Jack’s dad say the word “fate”? Seemed like four or five times.
6. The only people I noticed in the airport were Jack, Jin and A-L.
7. Okay, what happened to A-L after “Tom” went into the bar? She must have stayed around for a couple of days in order to allow time for Christian to die, Jack to fly over to Australia and then to get to the airport. What did she do? I guess we’ll never know.

Random Thoughts (Island events):
1. unHenry is still on his hunger strike. Does it have to do with the new shipment of food? Kim brought this up last week and I think she’s right.
2. unHenry is messing with Locke’s head but does Locke believe it? At first I thought he might, but then Locke agreed with Jack when Jack said that The Others are all liars. We’ll see.
3. What is Sayid building? A few episodes ago, we saw Sayid and Charlie building a huge lattice out of bamboo sticks but we never saw what happened with that. Are they building a trap of some sort? Of course, now, Charlie is helping Mr. Eko with his church.
4. I thought that A-L and Sawyer would kiss after they were wrestling around but I didn’t expect them to go all the way. They’re breaking the number one rule of horror movies: “If you have sex, you die next”. When will they learn?
5. Hurley and Libby are so cute together. Did anyone else catch it that Hurley was wearing a red shirt? That is the kiss of death (Boone wore one in his last episode). But since Hurley deflects all bad luck to those he cares about, Libby is the one who suffers. I hope that Libby is not dead because her back-story would be very interesting to see.
6. I liked it when Jin gave the thumbs up to Hurley. It was like their own way of saying good job, because Hurley had done that to Jin when he and Sun came out of their tent several episodes ago. I felt so sorry for Hurley not being able to find the private beach.
7. Why did A-L allow unHenry to cut himself loose? At first, I thought that she would let him try to escape and then shoot him in the back.
8. Are there two groups of Others? The group that Michael describes seems pretty destitute but the ones we saw with Claire’s flashback (with Ethan), Boat people and unHenry seemed more civilized / resourceful. I was very confused by Michael’s statement of them only having two guns. Kate, Sawyer, Jack and Locke know that they have more than 2 guns (since they took all the guns from the Losties when they were out in the jungle looking for Michael), and are more dangerous than just having guns. Also, what happened to the rifle that Michael took into the woods with him when he left?
9. Great finish!!! Michael has now been involved with two of the best endings this season. The first was when he was at the computer and “Dad?” appeared.

Previews for next week:
1. Michael has his arm in a sling and is in the holding pen that unHenry used to occupy.
2. Where is unHenry? Is Libby really dead?
3. Does Mr. Eko really fall off that cliff?

Tonight's episode by the numbers:
3:51 - The time on the clock when Ana Lucia woke up in her hotel room.
4 - The number of days Ana spent doing nothing in Sydney.
99.9 - The radio station on Ana and Jack's dad car.
5:29 - The time on the car radio when Jack turns on the radio.
22 - The amount of Others living in tents.
2 - The number of guards stationed outside the doors of the Other's hatch.
18, 1, 31 - The combination to the former armory.
1-877-426-7674 - The phone number for the Hanso organization.

I freaked out! I think Michael is tricking them to get Walt back. I didn't see that coming at all. As for A-L and Sawyer, I kept thinking "EWWWWW". :) I do think that Henry's hunger strike is a result of the new food. He definitely put A-L in her place by choking her. It keeps reminding me how bad the "Others" are. I wonder why they wanted Locke? Will they want Eko too because they are so similar?

This is why I love the show.

All I can say is "IT'S ABOUT TIME!" This is the LOST that I feel in love with while watching the first season on DVD.

First, Who is Goodwin? I know this is probably a stupid question, but for the life of me I can't remember. Thanks for your Help.

Second, Do you really believe that AL just couldn't kill UnHenry or was she trying to convince Michael to do it for her? I read this on another site and wanted to get the expert opinions from SLACKER'S ANONYMOUS!

Third, LOST has offically become the battle of Good vs Evil. UnHenry talked about Locke being one of the "Good Ones" and AL being one of the "Bad." What does this all mean?

Finally, I love the idea of Christian (Jack's Father) having an affair with Sarah (Carol Vessie from ED - aka Jack's Wife). I had never thought of this senario, but I LOVE IT!

Keep up the good posts. I will dig through all the Forums and Blogs to see if I can't find something new. Question ... Has anyone read the new LOST Book "Bad Twin"? It was released on Monday. Question #2 ... Has anyone played the interactive Lost Game via the internet? I just read an article about it?

Be sure and check out:

Great comments. This is definitely the type of Lost we have missed the past few episodes over the past couple months (since they show so many darned repeats!)

Daily Planet: Goodwin was the Other that Ana Lucia killed on that hilltop (he fell on the spear). The guy who had infiltrated their group. Basically the Tailees' version of Ethan. As for A-L not shooting unHenry... I hadn't thought of that alternative, but I tend to believe she really couldn't shoot him. We'd just seen her flashback with her calling her mom and saying she wanted to come home, which progressed into her telling Michael she just couldn't do it anymore. I just figured she'd had enough. But with this show... who knows!

We tape the show and watch it later, so we miss all the commercials. It seems there was a Hanso foundation commercial placed into the regular commercial line up as if it were a real commercial. After the commercial the show did not resume but there were more commercials. The commercial showed Leonardo Davinci and one of his artworks. You also see the space shuttle and a strand of DNA. In the background you see the sun coming up over what looks like a mountain and there is a body of water in front of it. Do you dare call the number 1-877-hansorg? I called it but did not get through. Some folks on the board have claimed to have gotten through. They say that Geronimo Jackson is mentioned. I read one account that said it says what have you done with Alvar Hanso and who is in charge here? The Hanso foundation was first introduced in the episode Orientation when we saw it in the hatch film.

It is getting more likely that HIM is Alvar Hanso. Another clue that came in that commercial. If you didnt see the comercial, its on the homepage of the hanso site.

Michael shooting Libby and Ana came as a complete shock to me. Why did Michael shoot Ana and Libby? Ok here is why. Michael made a deal with the others. They let Michael go. He pretends to be hurt when Jack and Kate find him. He agrees to kill Ana and rescue unHenry and in return he gets his son back. Libby was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She was not part of the plan. The only one for sure dead is Libby.
Is Ana dead? This is less clear. Notice that we do not see exactly where she is shot and you do not see any blood. There is still hope for her.

And how will he get Walt back? The deal may include more than just killing Ana and releasing unHenry. The deal may also include leading Jack and company into an ambush or perhaps to bring Locke to the others. But whatever arrangement Michael made with the others they are supposed to give him his son. Michael may have no choice but to believe them and rely on the honor system. Ironically Jack said mentioned how ludicrous it was to use the honor system with others in trading Fenry for Michael. Michael is lying when he talks about the savage others living in tents and wearing rags and no shoes. The others that captured Michael are technologically advanced and the whole savage appearance is no more than a ruse as we saw in the episode maternity leave when Kate found the disguises.

I posted before I'd read the ET article, so it seems most of my post is redundant! Oh well, at least I know I caught most of the important stuff the first time around!

Further Thoughts:

The manuscript that Sawyer was reading, "Bad Twin", went on sale this week. Here is a link to the Wal-Mart site for it: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4544363

Is Libby dead? On one hand, I don’t want Libby to die (for Hurley’s sake and to see her flashback). But if Libby is not dead, then she will tell everyone that Michael shot them. But, maybe not. What if she is one of The Others (and Michael knows this)? Then she will lie and corroborate Michael's story. This may further explain the mystery behind Libby being in the mental hospital watching Hurley. She is an Other. But why would they be watching Hurley? And this was before Hurley won the Lottery. Did The Others rig the Lottery so that Hurley would win it? How else would Hurley end up in Australia (he went there to ask about the bad luck numbers). Lots of questions. My head is spinning.

In the Season 1 finale flashback, A-L received a call on her cell phone while she was talking with Jack in the airport bar. Who was it? It wasn’t her mom because she just talked to her. It couldn’t have been Christian since he has already died. Is it important who it was? Probably not.

There is also a lot of talk on the message boards about Christian (Jack’s dad) not really being dead. Yes, Jack identified him in the morgue, but could Christian have been faking his death? Remember that there was no body in the coffin. Could Christian be associated with the Hanso Foundation?

Ana Lucia wakes up at 03:51 in Sydney. "Time for protection duty." I searched and found this: Lamentations 3:51 (King James Version) "Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city." Which relates to the fact that they were going out at that time to find his daughter.

Michael - is he the HIM that unHenry keeps referring to? unHenry stood up when Michael entered the room and looked like he was ready for any punishment that Michael was ready to dole out. Every time someone else enters the room (A-L, Locke, etc.), unHenry starts jabbering away trying to psyche them out of their intentions. But not to Michael. Why? Of course, it could have been that unHenry heard the gunfire and realized that maybe Michael wouldn't be in a talkative mood. ;-)

OR what if Michael has a twin? A Bad Twin? And this bad twin is the HIM that The Others refer to? At least that would explain why the good Michael built two rafts in order to get off the island and how the Bad Twin would be allowed to get back into camp. Naw, that’s too wild of a theory, isn’t it? Michael probably was told by The Others that they would return Walt if Michael returned unHenry. Maybe. Do you see how watching LOST can drive you crazy?

(The following excerpt came from a message board and I have not been able to confirm it.) In Ana's first flashback last night, she and her mother go to the morgue and Ana's mother says that the victim's name is Jason Alder. However, in “Collision”, during Ana-Lucia's flashback at the police station, Ana's mother says that the perpetrator’s name is Jason McCormick.

I have heard of all these other Lost connections (phone numbers, magazines, interactive web-sites, books, etc.) and I do worry that the show may lose some its strength if the powers that be stretch themselves too thin. I hope not. I would rather NOT have all this extraneous stuff and just have the TV show if the show itself will suffer. Let’s just cross our fingers that all will be okay.

Other thoughts from the Preview:
- Hurley holding someone's hand (Libby?)
- Locke and Mr. Eko pushing a large metal thing (the Nigerian plane?)
- Virgin Mary statue
