Lost, episode 2x21: ?

Ok, we just got done watching the episode on tape delay (no, still no Tivo in this house!) What a great episode. Lots of good flashbacks, past interactions amongst characters, suspense, new discoveries. And it was an Eko episode, who is my favorite character! It's late and I'm tired, but here are some random observations to get us started until the recaps come out tomorrow morning!

* nice beginning with Ana Lucia showing up in Eko's dream
* Adios Ana and Libby. I was really hoping Libby wouldn't be killed off.
* love the flashbacks with Eko's brother overlapping into both Eko and John's dream. How chilling was it when his brother told Eko to "bring the axe".
* So Eko is a troubled priest. Seeking fake IDs, etc.
* discovery of the Pearl station. How funny was it seeing Locke get all giddy about opening it? Anyhow, the thing has video cameras into the Swan (and possibly others). And a camera inside it, too (so who is watching THEM?) The hatch might be a psychologic experiment, but that sure doesn't explain the dreams, Locke walking, Rose's cancer disappearing, etc.
* The drowned girl's father was Claire's psychic, though he tells Eko he makes everything up. So what does that mean about Claire? Was that his first REAL vision, and therefore why we was so obsessed with her?
* Libby makes a flashback appearance at the airport as Eko is talking to the not-so-drowned girl. The girl talks about how she saw Eko's brother when she was "in between places".
* What was on the table in the Pearl hatch? Looked like cigarette butts and drugs. Hmmm.. heroine?
* Why did Locke put the map up the vacuum tube?
* I continue to love the Eko-Locke dynamics. Cool seeing Eko open up to Locke about his past and the miracles he's experienced thus far. You keep wishing Locke would do the same. The closest he's come is with Rose. He hinted at it with Eko by telling him Boone was a "sacrifice the island demanded".
* Once again, Locke's faith is rocked, this time after watching the Orientation film which shows his button-pushing to be an experiment.
* Libby managing to say "Michael", but Jack and Hurley don't realize what she meant.
* catch the Hanso foundation commercial? http://www.sublymonal.com/. It's owned by Sprite. Lymon...
* Sawyer hiding his stash right under his bed. Classic.
* Nice to see Sawyer comforting Kate
* Poor Hurley

Update: the MSNBC recap is now online.
So is Entertainment Weekly's recap.

There were cameras in the Pearl hatch, so who is watching the watchers?

Tonight's episode featured a girl who came back from the dead. I think it's possible Libby could do the same thing. The drugs might have caused her heart to stop, but as they pass through her system, she might recover. Stranger things have happened.

Could Anna have appeared in Eko's dream and told him to go with Lock because she was leading him to the evidence that identifies her killer?

Interesting read from Ask Ausiello on TvGuide.com with info on why they killed off Libby.

25. “I’m sorry I forgot the blankets.” – Hurley to Libby

Random Thoughts (Flashback events):
1. Not the most exciting flashback story but it did have some interesting points. Mr. Eko was hiding out in Australia posing as a priest. I couldn’t hear what the bad guy said when Mr. Eko asked him what would he be doing in Los Angeles. Mr. Eko was using the name Father Tundy (sp?) in Australia.
2. The father of the drowned girl was the psychic that Claire visited with. And her story had to be going on at the same time (even earlier) as Mr. Eko since they were on the same flight. So, was the dad a psychic or not? Did the girl really drown or not? Maybe he is a psychic and just lied to Mr. Eko in order for him to get on that plane. If the girl really did drown and return to life, then Mr. Eko would have stayed longer in Australia to research the miracle.
3. I can understand that the girl wanted to give Mr. Eko the message about seeing his brother in her dream (3rd person to dream of Eko’s brother) but did she really have to go to the airport to do it? This would indicate that she lives in Sydney – did Claire live in Sydney? Why couldn’t she just go to the church?
4. It was nice to see Libby at the airport (airport scenes have become my new favorite hobby – spot the crossovers). This proves that she was not already on the island when the plane crashed but it does not necessarily mean that she’s not an Other.
5. ERROR. I paused my DVR last night when the Undertaker was playing the autopsy tape for Mr. Eko and noticed something wrong. The recorder was sitting on top of a report that was facing the other way (so the words were all upside down). I craned my neck to read the upside down words – not really much there. But the main thing I caught was the letter head on the form. It had the word hospital and then the location underneath. Location said Honolulu, Hawaii!!!! Why would the producers allow that? Mr. Eko and the Undertaker were in Australia. Does no one on the show watch the film closely and find these errors? How hard would it have been to create an “authentic” letterhead? Grrrrr. Anyway, something tells me that we will see more of this undertaker. Just a feeling.

Random Thoughts (Island events):
1. So, we were all right about Michael letting unHenry go and blaming all the shootings on him. I was glad that Libby lived for a while but I was very disappointed that her last word was “Michael” and nothing else. That has been done so many times before in other movies and shows. I was really hoping that LOST would throw in something different. At least she could have said “Michael. He shot me.” Then, Jack could have initially surmises that she was trying to tell Michael that unHenry shot her.
2. I thought it was very cruel of Jack to give Sawyer the ultimatum of getting the heroin only if Kate went with him. Would Jack have let Libby suffer in pain if Sawyer refused to take Kate with him? Also, I thought that Sawyer would give Kate the heroin to take back to the hatch and then move the guns, etc. to a new location. But he went back with her.
3. Loved the part where Mr. Eko knocked Locke out and when he came to, he asked “Why did you hit me?” Eko’s reply – “You were being difficult.” Thought it was creepy seeing Locke at the airplane again unable to walk. Remember, that was why Boone had to climb the tree to search the plane.
4. In Mr. Eko’s first dream, when he was talking to his brother in the hatch, I loved the keyboard full of question marks. That was cool.
5. In the new hatch (Pearl), there were nine TV monitors. Were all nine cameras running in the Swan Hatch or at other places too? Seemed like only one of them was working. If there were backup video tapes of the monitors, then Locke could go back and see what happened when Ana-Lucia got shot. But I doubt there were. The numbers in the printout were not the six numbers we know. What does that mean? Numbers are encoded? Another hatch report?
6. The video was very interesting. It was the same guy from the Swan video but with some differences. Pearl video – made in 1980 on VHS, presenter’s name was Dr. Whitman, could use both arms. Swan video – made in 1985 on 8mm, presenter’s name was Dr. Candle, could only use one arm. Also, the Swan video talked about the “incident” that occurred. Could this incident have caused him to lose the use of his arm? The Pearl video mentioned catching the Pala Ferry to the village when your time is up. What does that mean? Was the boat that Zeke, et al kidnapped Walt on the Ferry? Where is the village? A ferry is only designed to go a few miles, so the main island has to be close. Right? Why was the 1980 video shot on VHS but the 1985 video shot on 8mm?
7. If the presenter’s name was Dr. Whitman, could he be associated with Whitman Laboratories that made the pregnancy test?
8. If someone was watching the monitors and saw Michael near the computer, could they have entered in all the stuff that Michael thought was coming from Walt?
9. Are there six hatches or seven or nine? The videos say they are in Hatch # of 6, but there were seven circles on Locke’s map. And there were nine monitors in the “?” hatch.
10. Where did that tube go? Will Locke’s map show up again? I’m guessing it will.

Previews for next week:
1. Zeke on a horse lassoing Michael in the jungle. Looks like a scene out of Planet of the Apes.
2. Michael getting injected with a needle from someone. Could he have the sickness?
3. Sayid questioning Michael’s story. We need more stories with Sayid!
4. Michael being told by an Other (?) that Walt is outside the door.
5. Group looking at something on the beach.

We, too, laughed when Eko said he hit Locke because he was being difficult. Great observation about Locke not being able to walk again at the plane. Hadn't thought about that deja-vu. Very interesting thoughts on the Orientation video differences, and the discussion of the ferry. I'm ready for the next two weeks' worth of episodes. 3 hours left to this season, then we can resume are regularly scheduled lives! ;-)

Additional Thoughts:

EKO’s DREAM
For those of you who like to over analyze the episodes on a microscopic level like we do, you may have noticed that little scene in Eko's dream where a bunch of images flashed by before he saw his brother, Yemi, sitting at the computer. Here's a list of what was shown:
- A dead body floating in the ocean.
- A crucifix necklace on the ground.
- The scene with the Other who had the teddy bear on a rope.
- A campfire.
- Jin blindfolded.
- The statues of Virgin Mary on a table.
- The drug plane when Eko and Charlie set it ablaze.
- Yemi in a church.
- The Arrow Dharma symbol on a wall.
- A Holy Bible.
- A close-up shot of Eko's staff.
- Eko looking at Yemi's corpse.
- Closeup of Locke's face.
- Eko looking through the black mist.
- The crucifix on Yemi's dead body.
- The plane Yemi was on, taking off from the runway.
- The truck of soldiers chasing the plane.
- Yemi getting shot.
- The Asian Dharma guy from the first video.
- The Swan Dharma symbol on a wall.

PEARL
The 'pearl' is a fascinating literary symbol. A natural pearl is formed when an oyster ingests a grain of sand. In response to the irritation, the oyster secretes a liquid that coats the grain and hardens, protecting the oyster's soft tissues. This happens over and over, each secretion forming a new layer, causing the pearl to grow.

The pearl is a great symbol of how something precious/beautiful/good can come from suffering. For example, it's no accident, that in the book "The Scarlet Letter", Hester Prynne's baby is named Pearl ... she's the beautiful result of Hester's adultery.

'The Pearl' is also a perfect symbol for the rationalization of an experiment that causes harm to it's subjects, but whose result is "for the greater good".

WEB-SITE
Here is a great web-site that lists tons of stuff. Here you can see that the psychic was the same as the one with Claire and also the person who was confessing to Mr. Eko in last night’s episode looks a lot like Hugh McIntyre (from HANSO) but I could be wrong.

MICHAEL
Also, I thought more about Libby’s saying just Michael and it might be enough for Jack to piece it together. In the beginning of the episode, Michael told Jack that unHenry shot Ana-Lucia, Libby and then him. But if Libby was shot before Michael (and presumably passed out), would she have known that Michael was also shot? Why would she say his name at all, instead of the killer’s name? Five more days and we’ll know if Jack or Kate start suspecting something is wrong. It looks like Sayid is already questioning Michael’s story. I can’t wait!

Just saw this news article and thought I would post it our here for everyone. It's part good news and part bad news.

"ABC, responding to a falloff in Lost ratings, is likely to delay its start to reduce long stretches of repeats."

There were no dates discussed but I did see where the Season 2 DVDs come out in mid-October!!!

From TVGUIDE.COM:

Lost Repeats Voted Off the Island
Are the castaways pulling a Prison Break? Scheduling-wise, it looks that way. In a Tuesday-morning conference call, ABC entertainment president Steve McPherson announced that Lost will launch its third season with seven consecuctive new episodes, temporarily cede its time slot to the Taye Diggs midseason thriller Day Break, and then return for an uninterrupted run in January or early February, Variety reports. On your mark, get set... discuss.

Also, the Season 2 DVDs will come out on October 3rd.

Thanks for the post, Jim. That will be so much better next season not having the constant repeats in between.

Here is a synopsis of a new show that will be on ABC next year (Thursdays at 9pm CST) that is being developed by J.J. Abrams (who also developed LOST).

“Six Degrees” (one-hour, Thursday, 10:00 p.m., ET) – Who will you touch? Who
will touch you? They say that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other
person through a chain of six people, which means that no one is a stranger… for
long. In this hour-long drama from the producers of “Lost” and “Alias,” six very
different New Yorkers go about their lives without realizing the impact they're
having on one another – yet. A mysterious web of coincidences will gradually
draw these strangers closer, changing the course of their lives forever. Is it
happenstance? Fate? Is there a greater force at work in our world, guiding us
along and connecting our lives?

This intriguing tale of intertwined destinies reminds us that romance, success,
peace or forgiveness might be right around the corner, but they can also be lost
in an instant. It’s a story that underlines just how small the world really is, and how someone just five people away might be
shaping our future right now. Jay Hernandez (“Friday Night Lights”), Erika
Christensen (“Flightplan”), Bridget Moynahan (“Sex and the City”), Dorian
Missick (“Lucky Number Slevin”), Hope Davis (“About Schmidt”) and Campbell Scott
(“The Secret Lives of Dentists”) star.

Cast:
Jay Hernandez (“Friday Night Lights”): Carlos
Bridget Moynahan (“I, Robot”): Whitney
Hope Davis (“Proof”): Laura
Campbell Scott (“Loverboy”): Steven Casemen
Dorian Missick (“Lucky Number Slevin”): Damian
Erika Christensen (“Traffic”): Mae AndersonCredits:

EP: J.J. Abrams (“Lost,” “Alias”)
EP: Bryan Burk (“Lost,” “Alias”)
EP/Writer: Stu Zicherman (“Elektra”)
EP/Writer: Raven Metzner (“Elektra”)

JimC -- thanks for that info. "Six Degrees" sounds very intriguing. It would play on the same interest we all get from the flashback sequences in Lost...
