Lost, episode 3.05: The Cost of Living

Ok, I'm in mourning. Why, oh why, would they kill off my favorite character?!? Guess that'll teach the rest of the cast that they REALLY better not get wayside with the law, as evidenced by Ana Lucia, Libby and now Eko. Either that, or don't be an actor for the tail-section group from the plane! Does that mean Bernard is the last of them, other than the ones who were abducted? What a bummer, though, about Eko, because I really loved his character. The spoilers had said "a major character (as in a series regular) whose name is not Sawyer will join Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia and Libby in the big island in the sky. And you're not going to believe who it is"... and boy were they right. I should have known when they conveniently started including Paulo and Nikki into the main group that one (or more) of the regulars really was doomed. Grrrr.

That aside, this was a really great episode for me. How many different story lines could they throw at us at once. You've got Eko wrestling with his past demons. You've got the return of the mist/island monster. You've got Juliette plotting with Jack to kill Ben in a surgical accident. You've got Ben telling Jack that they had indeed planning to break him and get him "invested" in their cause. You've got Locke & Co. tapping in to the signal for some new station we haven't seen, complete with a patch-eyed scary dude. And we end it with Eko's ominous "You are next".

Then next week (Episode 3.06 - "I Do" - Kate-centric) we see Alex making an appearance, we see Ben being prepped for surgery, some serious Sawyer butt-kicking, and Kate mugging down with someone. We know this'll be a good one, because it is the last episode before the winter break. They are hyping it as the best so far this season, and it better be a good cliff-hanger, because it has to tide us over until February 7th before we get Epsidoe 3.07 ("Not In Portland", Juliette-centric).

34. “You speak to me as if I were your brother.” – Yemi to Mr. Eko
35. “What did he say, John?” “He said ‘We’re next.’.” – Sayid + Locke

Random Thoughts (Flashback events):
1. At first, I was curious on why no one in the village recognized Mr. Eko as a bad man and then I remembered from one of his other flashbacks that Yemi tells Eko that although Eko does his business far away from the village, Yemi has heard the stories about Mr. Eko.
2. I’m guessing that Amani was the lady we saw in the Smoke Monster last season.
3. I wonder if Yemi kept the photograph of Yemi and Eko in a special place in the Bible. I couldn’t the pages clearly enough to see which Book it was in.
4. You just knew that Mr. Eko was going to take care of business once those bad guys showed up. And he did.
5. Did anyone notice if there was a logo, or sign, on the boxes with the vaccine shipment? Some of the message boards say that it looked like one of the Dharma logos. But it may have just been the sarcophagus – which is the logo found on the Medical Station hatch.
6. Now, we also know how Mr. Eko got to London. But don’t you need a passport to go from Nigeria to London? In another flashback episode when we see Mr. Eko with the drowned girl, he gets a passport from someone in order to fly to Los Angeles.

Random Thoughts (Island events):
1. As soon as I heard Yemi tell Mr. Eko that it is time to be judged, I just knew that it was all over for Mr. Eko. I guess we'll never know how his brother's plane ended up on the island. Eko was charged by his brother to watch the hatch. To make sure nothing happened to it. Is there a collective consciousness on this island that was mad at Eko because Eko failed his mission? He was unrepentant, He confused the island with his brother, as the "clone" pointed out, Eko still thought that "he" the clone was his brother. Is Smokey the “hit man” for the collective consciousness? Why and how it knocks down trees and tosses people around like pebbles? It just goes to show you that we can not get too comfortable. Even though Mr, Eko was a favorite character, his death brings forward the idea that the island is mysterious and dangerous.
2. As soon as someone resolves their issues, they’re gone. Sure, Shannon and Ana-Lucia were shot (the island didn’t kill them), but still. Let’s hope that we NEVER find out how Locke became paralyzed. ;-)
3. The creators of the show deny it, but it sure seems like they are in purgartory and that when someone does resolve their personal issues, they are “removed” from the island. Either by death from the island (Boone, Mr. Eko, Artsz), or by death from each other (Ana-Lucia, Libby, Kelvin, Shannon, Danielle’s crew). Naw, I’m reaching now.
4. Locke believes what he saw manifested itself as white, as we have seen what Eko saw manifested itself to him as black. White/black duality strikes again!
5. How' come the island fixes Locke's legs and Rose's cancer, yet Ben get's a raw deal?
6. How does Desmond know that the computer could be used for other things? There’s a story there.
7. Was the funeral a Hindu funeral? I thought it might be because they were wearing white and burned the body. If it is, since they always say "Namaste" at the end of all the training videos, it might connect the Others to the Dharma Initiative.
8. Could the Eye-Patch Man be Kelvin? Did he really die? Or could it be someone that is connected to one of the Losties? How did the guy with the patch know that they started to watch him? The camera must have lit up or something. Quite convenient that he knocks out the feed right when they pick it up.
9. Will we EVER see Bernard and Rose? How about Desmond’s girlfriend off the island? Wouldn’t that be great to see next week as a cliffhanger?
10. Does anyone think there is any significance to Juliet's original choice of movie "To Kill a Mockingbird"? Are there any 'Boo-Radley' parallels to Ben? We think he is bad and that Juliet is good but is it the other way around?
11. In the first episode of this season, we see Juliet crying. Was it because she found out two days earlier that Ben has a tumor? The more I think of it, the more I believe that Ben let himself get caught by Danielle, but why? Why wouldn’t the Others just welcome the Losties into their camp? Jack would be much more appreciative and would be glad to help Ben out. There must be a back-story there where other Losties hurt the Others, or something.
12. In an early episode of this season, Ben offers Jack the option to go back home, so maybe Jack would do the operation and save Ben for the ticket to go home.

Culture Connections
1. Song “I Wonder” by Brenda Lee or Vikki Carr (both singers recorded this song and they sound similar). Song has also been recorded by Aretha Franklin and many others. Chris Isaak also has a song called "I Wonder" but it is entirely different.
2. Movie “To Kill a Mockingbird”

Previews for next week:
1. Lots of quick cuts but it looks like it will focus on Sawyer, Jack, Kate and Ben.
2. Like Kevin said, I hope it’s a good one since we have to wait until after the SuperBowl for the next one.

Tonight's episode by the numbers:
2 – number of days that Mr. Eko had been unconscious
6 – number of months between vaccine shipments
20 – percent of the vaccine shipment that the church can keep
80 – percent of the vaccine shipment that the bad guys take

Sawyer Names
none

According to USA Today, Eko asked to be written off..

"Akinnuoye-Agbaje asked to be written off the series. After losing both parents last year, he wanted to return to his London home and work on a film he'll direct."

This just occured to me last night. Remember in Season 1 when Sayid stole the maps from Danielle. She had mapped the whole island, but she didn't have the Alcatraz island on any of her drawings. So does it really exist?

Also, I'm a bit peeved that the writers are wasting time showing us flashbacks we've already seen and introducing new characters when they don't even have time to cover the characters they already have. Where are Rose & Bernard? Bring them back! Who cares about Nicki & Paolo? His only contribution was to tell us the toilet still works? Please.

The episode brings up the possibility that the mist might be some shape-shifting entity, as evidenced by Eko's encounters with it and clone Yemi and the ghosts of the guys he killed. Adding to that, what about the possibility it is also the same thing as when Jack saw his father on the island season one, or Kate saw in the horse or Hurley saw in his imaginary friend in season two?

I didn't really like this last episode because it didn't move the storyline forward enough.

Eko is a great character and I will miss him. I didn't like the way he died or the weirdness with his brother at the end.

I do think that Juliette is playing Jack. I think that Ben is going to give Jack some personal information or bribe him with "If I live, you get to go home" so Jack will be torn on whether or not to kill Ben. I Honestly, I think that Jack will not kill Ben and that Ben will not fulfill his promise to let him go. That will be weird though, because he did let Michael and Walt go.

Speaking of....when are we going to find out why the "Others" take kids.

So weird!

Another interesting idea: What if the music that Sayid and Hurley picked up on their radio was something that the Others were playing over their speakers?

Anyway, here are the song lyrics to the song "I Wonder":

“I WONDER”

I wonder my little darling
Where can you be this moonlit night?
Are you holding someone tight?
I wonder

My heart's, my heart is aching
And I'm a fool, I'm a fool to let it go on breaking
Maybe I'll awaken, find that I'm mistaken
But I wonder

Baby, since we're through I've been through lovers' lane
Ah' but in my heart there's only pain
You went traveling, but will it last
While I'm traveling, I'm traveling, I'm traveling nowhere
Fast sweetheart

I wonder where, where, where, where little baby
If this new love dies where will you be?
Will your heart come running back to me?
I just wonder

Baby, since we're through I've been through lovers' lane
Ah' but in my heart there's only pain
You went traveling, but will it last
While I'm traveling, I'm getting no where fast sweetheart

I wonder, yes I wonder little baby
Will you think of me again today?
Though I may be a million miles away
I wonder

Another Biblical Reference: Locke & Eko roll away the large boulder in front of the tomb only to find the body missing and the statues of Mary lying about.

Also, Locke's comment of "Don't confuse coincidence for fate" was a cool throw back to when Eko and Locke first met last season and Eko told Locke the opposite, "Don't confuse fate for coincidence."
